what are "points"?

In the box with my avatar, I see the number of posts, the number of likes, and then there is a third line for points.
Are these good points or bad points? How do you earn them? What do they do?

They come from "trophies" which were built in with the new software. They don't display anywhere though The link above shows what they are and how many points are associated to them.
