Urgent Weird growth between Cockatiels nostrils

Hi guys,

I have a 3 year old Male cockatiel and have noticed a weird growth of feathers or something in between his nostrils. I can't seem to find anything in Google about this.

When I took a picture it looks as if one of his nostrils has been cut, but it isn't red or inflamed from what I can tell.

His mood is okay and he's fine and chirpy, would like some advice on what I should do...

Haven't cut his nails in a while as well, not sure if that may have anything to do with it?

Doesn't sneeze often or anything...

Attached is an image.

Hopefully this is a clearer picture.

It's been like this for a while, but didn't really take too much notice of it as it didn't affect his mood or food or water consumption.

My new phone has a pretty impressive camera so now this worries me a little bit.

Okay, that is NOT normal. That nare (nostril as we call it) is abnormally shaped, the bump is not a normal looking bump. You MOST definitely need to seek the medical attention of an Avian Vet (preferred)

This is not something you cannot get diagnosed here. We can only give suggestions and that is alarming to see FOR ME anyway. It can be an infection that is present. Without a doubt go to the Vet. It looks as if whatever it is, is around the top left, bottom left and the tissue looks like it's being destroyed by an infection.

Lastly, I hope your sweet Tiel heals quickly.

It really is scary looking...

Any idea what it could be other than infection? Maybe vitamin deficiency?

I feel so shizzty about this situation and will organise a visit to the vet asap for my baby.

The fact that I can't even find anything relevant to this makes me feel even worse.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

Tissue damage, raw looking and an odd shape to me says infection. But it can be a tumor type growth too that is stretching the tissue around the nare. I am sure if you have an avian Vet they will culture the tissue and possibly flush the nares for a culture as well. It's water and saline they usually use. But don't stress just yet, but you really need to have that looked at by a professional. Hopefully you can see an all bird Vet that just specializes in Birds.

Keep us updated!

Will do.

I have sent the images to the vets email and will organise an appointment to see a bird specialist.

Thanks again for your time.

Here's some more pics.
Very cool! Glad you could do that. My Avian is very nice and he can too also possibly offer advice to what he sees by the picture, but the real issue is what is causing the abnormality and the lumps around the nare.

Wishing you the best, please let us know!

Hi guys.

Dropping an update.

My sister took the bird to the vet and had a check up. Seems he's deficient in vitamin a, recieved a vitamin shot. They noticed a large amount of yeast in his poop from my parents giving him bread when I've told them not to...

So it seems he had a sinus infection at one stage and its healed on it's own. They cleaned his nostrils but it will remain looking the way he does in the pictures above.

Also been told to change his diet and add more greens and pellets.

Thanks

Good that he went to the vet. Are they doing anything about the yeast?

They recommended we stop feeding him bread.

I will yell at my parents when I get home from work. At this case he doesn't have a yeast infection which I am very thankful for.

Plus my bird is incredibly picky about foods he eats. Refuses to even try new food like fruits, treats or vegetables unless I starve him for 2 days.

If there is yeast in the poop I would assume he has a yeast infection which needs to be treated. ???

Please don't "starve" him while trying to encourage him to try new foods...it can take a long time before he will try anything new...but keep offering them. My tiels can be very picky also. Trying serving veggies in different ways...serving veggies on a toy skewer, or on a small plate - finely chopped. For example - some of mine like to chew on a leaf of romaine, while another likes it shredded. Same with carrots - some like to nibble on a slice while another likes it grated. Sprinkle some millet seeds on them. Don't give up! Try sprouting also...mine love sprouted wheatberries.

Thanks for the suggestion guys.

We've gotten his some new food to mix into his diet and have been recommended to give him nilstat for the next week.

His nose looks a lot better after it's been cleaned. The vet has said that it will never heal correctly but it should be okay.

Glad its nothing really bad & was checked as it looked nasty.

Keep trying veggies as tiels are not so hot on fruits. Make some aotmeal or brown rice & add peas & corn & carrots or whatever. Some like raw veggies...broccoli etc...keep experimenting & hang or pin the veggies to the cage so they can nibble as they might like it better than in a bowl.

They sell stainless skewers that you can hang too!

If the vet found a yeast or fungus in your bird treatment is needed. I will not go away by itself! If left untreated your bird will get very sick. I have lost a budgie to yeast. Oh by the way feeding bread is not how a bird gets yeast. The yeast in bread is not the culprit. It is most likely passed down to the bird from parents. It is also contagious to other birds. I will post a link for you to read. In the meantime add apple cider vinegar to the drinking water that is unfiltered or says with mother on the label. 2 tsp per 32 ounces or 1 quart. Keep the remainder in the frig until gone. I would do this for at least one week and then repeat as needed.
