i read the very informative article by Shawna Vitamin D3 for Our Birds and learned my birds need 20 IU -30 IU of D3 daily. I have this ambient uvb meter but no idea about the vitamin D3 production.

It’s very inconvenient now to take them out in direct sun for various reasons. I have a covered flying room which lets in light from the sides. I just ordered this made for humans meter but the solar meter tech said you can interpolate the readings for birds. They are closed today so I don’t know if it’s sensitive like my model 6.2 or not so it doesn’t need direct sunlight. Any way I ordered it to see if the flying room is adequate for D3 production.

Solarmeter Model 6.4 Vitamin D3 UV Meter - Measures 280-400nm with Range from 0-1999 IU/Minute: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

Watching with interest, but I doubt much if any UV-B. Prove me wrong ;)
I hope I can. Otherwise I have to set two huge tables up, carry the travel cages out, carry them back in, fold the tables and set them on the bricked area. Omg get tired just thinking about it!

Silly me! I should have checked with my current uvb meter to see if there’s any in the flying room lol.

At 9 am the sun is already high in the sky so from the sides I’m getting 2 micro watts per sq cm. A reptile bulb provides 30 such units. @Ripshod can you convert your Arcadia output into my units so I can see what an avian bulb provides. A picture would be very helpful too. Thanks

for vit D synthesis the UVB needs to be emitted with a wavelength of 295 nanometers.

UV-B is UV-B, and that's 280-320nm.
Calculations never work out right @saroj12. There's many things to consider including distance and the reflector.

D3 production peaks at 295 nm

Where did you get that from, a lamp producer? It's all usable, as in it only falls off slightly either side of the centre wavelength. Not enough to worry about any. As end users we have no practical way of testing the wavelength.
