Hi everyone, my 4 month old African grey parrot has had an abnormality today. He was asleep on his perch in my room (he declines to sleep in his cage) and he was pooping every 15 minutes. I decided to check his poop and it looked a lot like diarrhea and was associated with a bad odor. He is breathing fine, doesn’t have any mucus around the nostrils, is stress-free, was playing and singing all day. Should I be worried?
Attached is a picture of his stool.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

He has an appointment but its around 16 hours from now so I’m very worried.

Ps: the big chunk in the poo is a dried banana that fell down.

Why is it abnormal? I'm no poop expert, but I've seen poop look one way this minute and one way the next.

I've seen water poop, fruit poop, even ice cream poop.

Just curious as I don't see the 'needs help' in that poo. Please explain what you're seeing.

OP ( better safe than sorry, listen to the members here).

I too was worried about Paco's poo. It get's watery when he eats fresh veggies and fruit. There is no smell to the pool. It was real bad with fresh pineapple. I don't think the previous owner ever gave him fresh food on a regular basis. She said she gave him some banana and a carrot one time. I want him to be healthy. I will look at the links. 20190418_195906.jpg

it's the smell that concerns me. Is the poop normal now?

Update: I took him to an emergency vet yesterday. All is good. Turned out my wife was adding water to his cage, he already gets all his water from the hand feeding so he was getting an excessive amount of water. He is currently at home sitting with me while being monitored. Thank you all for your help! :).

Great news. What did the vet say about the odor?

Thank you :). She couldn't figure out what was causing it, the poop he had at the vet was odorless. They conducted many tests on him and all checked out, all the poops he had today were odorless as well; we're currently closely monitoring the poops in case anything pops up. Very strange though.

Can he wait 16 hours or should I take him to an emergency clinic?
Any ideas what it could be? I was thinking bacterial infection.

How is he doing today?

Well Paco's poo is defiantly related to the veggies and fruit. I only gave him mashed yams, chopped kale and fresh corn on the cob. No veggies such as pepper or any fruit. Pooo is back to normal!

Bird dropping produce little or no odor. If you have poop associated with odor, it's usually a sign of infection. When you see the vet, note to them the size and frequency of his pooping pattern. Make note of too much or too little liquid in your birds waste. The picture you attached looks more watery, and loose, dark green...maybe something rich in his diet past couple days?
If I may make note, my wife has seen an increase in past 3 months of birds coming in ER with diarrhea. The pattern noted from them all is fresh veggies. A possible contamination of veggies. We all know that there has been a lot of fresh vegetables recalls lately from supermarkets. Be cautious of that and throroughly wash all veggies!

I know dirty veggies scare me. Should we wash them in vinegar?

Wouldn't hurt, just not a strong solution of vinegar. I usually get my veggies from local farm markets where they are recently picked when possible. The imported veggies I don't trust.
