Oh to live in Oz...you guys have some of the most beautiful parrots around! Thanks for the update. I was looking at a long billed corella before I found Burt, all the ones I have ever met were delightful birds with gentle natures but clownish behaviors.
Are they larger than Bare-eyeds?Thanks for the update. I was looking at a long billed corella before I found Burt, all the ones I have ever met were delightful birds with gentle natures but clownish behaviors.
I really do not know to be honest, I have not really seen a bare eyed 2 up close that I can think of.Are they larger than Bare-eyeds?
The initial info came back and he’s in good health, no problems seen. We also did a heavy metal test, chlamidia, and DNA sex that will take a few weeks to come in. Houdini weighs 540 grams and is bigger than a BE2. BE2’s are more the size of a D2, about 400 grams. I’ll try and get more pictures tomorrow.UW was were Dr Barb studied to become a vet. I will have to show her those pictures.
Did the blood work come yet?
That's good news. Hope the other tests come back with good results, too.The initial info came back and he’s in good health, no problems seen. They are complete clowns. Mickey is fun to watch because he has so much energy and is all over his cage. I need to get more toys in there for him. He’s got lots of SS toys that he seems to like but I need to get some chewing and foraging toys up for both of them. They are both incredibly gentle with their beaks. I gave them almonds in the shell on Friday and they didn’t seem to realize that they could break them open and would turn them around and around in their beaks like they were feeling them with their tongues. They’re very different from the other white Cockatoos and the Galahs.Good news, the clinic is taking care of BE2 while her owner is on vacation in Mexico. I haven't meet her yet, but hear that she is snuggle bug. She has never ever had any seeds, always pellets, fruit, veggies and a few nuts. She love forging toys.
I just got back the heavy metal results on Houdini and they are negative! YAY! His eye looks better too. When we first noticed it, it looked like the nictating membrane was kind of popping out a little bit from the inside of the eye. The ophthalmologist said they found something behind the eye that could have been pushing it forward and took a small biopsy of it to make sure it wasn't anything to worry about. They said it could just be plain old inflammation and I haven't heard anything about that yet but I have to admit that his eye looks better. You can no longer see the bit of nictating membrane sticking out but he doesn't open it all the way all the time. It is open but just not quite as wide as the other eye. I'm hoping it keeps getting better. When I looked at his band, all I could really see was numbers but the vets took a good look with a light they could shine on the band and seem to think they saw what they thought was a W but I suppose it could be an M. Are those the only intake stations there are/were? I've never had a wild caught bird before! LOL!I hope Houdini's eye is okay. They are both so lucky to have you. I think you know that Elvis is wild caught. The bands are roundish, with 3 letters and 3 numbers. Could your "W" be an "M"? That would mean he came through the Michigan station. Unfortunately, I think that's about all the info you can get. (Elvis came through Florida.)
Florida - bands starting with the letter F
California - bands starting with the letters C and O
Michigan - bands starting with the letter M
Illinois - bands starting with the letter I
Louisiana - bands starting with the letter L
New York - bands starting with the letter N
Yes, I'm pretty sure those were the only import stations. Is the band kind of rolled? I think I have a pic of Elvis's. I'll post if I do. I'm glad Houdini's test results are good and his eye is looking better. They sound like really great birds. I'm looking forward to hearing how they are once they're settled in more. I knew Elvis was wild caught. These two haven't been handled in years though and it's going to take a while for them to get used to us. We'll take it slowly on their terms. I'd really like to get a look at Mickey's band because I would bet that they came in at the same place but I'm not so willing to forcefully towel him just for that. We need to get him into the vet but for now, it's not an emergency case and we are out of money! I nearly died when they told me that Houdini's bill was nearly $700 but we had the specialist and the biopsy for the eye. For the time being, Mickey seems perfect, so I'm going to not worry about him unless he starts showing some sign of problems. We'll get him in soon enough. He is eating pellets now though which is a huge positive. I thought for sure he would give me a hard time but he's settling in really well. They are both super sweet birds and actually are quite quiet unless they need something...they will sound off for sure if they are out of food which cracks me up! I always know when their food dishes are empty...it's the first thing I check when they start honking!
Elvis is absolutely adorable! Yes, Houdini and Mickey both have the rounded open bands. The vets agreed that they are definitely wild caught...so amazing! And don't you think Elvis's feet are HUGE? Howie and I always laugh because they seem too big for his body. LOL.
Thanks. I think he's adorable. He's running me ragged lately though. Hormones I think. It is amazing that 2 wild caughts ended up together. Do you know if they were together before the last person had them? I always wish Elvis could tell me his story. I know his history for like 2 years before me. I often wonder about the other 20+.Elvis is absolutely adorable! Yes, Houdini and Mickey both have the rounded open bands. The vets agreed that they are definitely wild caught...so amazing!
It's just a guess but I'm thinking that they might have come out of quarantine together. How often do you find two wild caught Cockatoss of different species together this long after the '92 import ban? The woman who had them just didn't have any information for us. I will eventually check Mickey's band and see what it says. Something tells me that they have been together ever since they got to this country though. They cry to each other every now and then. We've been unbelievably busy but I want to eventually get them in the same room together. I need to move some cages around to get there though. I swear that I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off sometimes! Thanks. I think he's adorable. He's running me ragged lately though. Hormones I think. I was wondering the same thing if they had basically always been together. How long did the woman have them again? I had to have my vet and his tech read Elvis's band too. It's hard to do, especially when they're new to you (and if like Elvis, in perpetual motion). It's just a guess but I'm thinking that they might have come out of quarantine together. The woman we got them from said she only had them for a few years and that they belonged to her ex...I didn't ask anything about who that person was or why that person didn't take the birds when they split. I am really curious as to why she thought their age was 5 and 10 though but will probably never know more than I do.I was wondering the same thing if they had basically always been together.
