My only rule is 10 inches of clearance on all sides of the bird. More importantly a very special hand picked perch for their delicate feet. A natural limb on the beefy side (2-3") with all it's irregularities so there are infinite possible positions for a comfortable roost.

Mine sleeps in one of those grass tents, and it is only used for sleeping.

Jasper sleeps in a wire dog crate, with a thick dog mattress and a soft cover on the bottom. She was put into a sleep crate mainly to ease the bad arthritis in both feet and legs - therefore, no perch. She had started falling too often before putting her into the dog crate to sleep.

We're also debating a large dog crate for a sleep cage for our new Too. We've got one that was used for our Greyhound years ago, so it's huge. The interesting thing will be installing a perch.
