Just got this new little one today. I thought it was a male, but I haven't had parakeets in years so I'm not great at telling. Also, am I correct in assuming it's pretty young? It's pretty small and has short tail feathers. Thanks in advance.

Cutie for sure. Love the name. Too young for accurate sexing. Usually after first molt a budgie can be sexed more accurately. What are you going to feed him? Please get a cage mate for him/her. Budgies are much happier that way.

@Lady Jane is correct. The black lines across the baby's forehead show how young he/she is. Some hybrids are hard to tell but usually the area above their beak, the Ceres will turn blue for male or beige for female. Our Sola was considered male since she had some blue in her Ceres but if finally turned bone color.

You'll see in mine (they're about a year now), the blue one on the left is Remi and he's male. The budgie on the right is Sola, a female. Her Ceres is skin tone.

You have a very cute Female !

Since she is a recessive pied, she will likely keep some of the baby bars even after she matures. She's going to be a stunner! Congrats!

If Michelle says you have a female then you do. She is very knowledgeable.

Thank you everyone! I've decided to name her Nephale. It's Greek, meaning 'goddess of the clouds'. She's a sweetheart and has already started getting used to perching on my hand. Right now I'm feeding her seed, but once she settles in I plan to switch her over to pellets. I'll be introducing some fruits and veggies soon too. I'm going to hold off on getting her a cage mate until she tames down. I'm a stay at home mom so I have lots of time to spend with her. Thanks again for all your help!

One more note. Do not be surprised if Nephale turns her beak up at fruit. Most budgies won't eat it. You can put fruit in birds I bread.

I'm leaning towards female as well.

I would recommend a diet of 50/50 seeds to pellets, then however much fresh foods you can get her to eat.

My first hunch was female as well but time will tell for sure!
