Your initial reaction to what was wrong(you suspected something bad), I think was because you are both so spiritually linked and he was communicating with you. Please please keep yourself open (like Ginger mentioned) and TRY REALLY HARD to listen for him. I believe he will let you know he is ok. Somehow.

Keep the beautiful memories close, the wonderful snuggles you had before going to the vet, under your blanket together

Yes they were. YOu have others that will start to grow in your heart and emerge when the time is right. For now though mourn the loss of your two best friends. They were well loved and not all can say that. I am so very sorry for your loss.
