Sam is a Red Winged Amazon Parrot. I just got him about a week ago. I never owned a bird before. I baby sat for him a few times thru the years. He was my brothers bird they were together for 37 years. My brother passed away and no one else wanted Sam, So Aunt Faith took him in. So Sam is about 38 years old he has no band so was caught in the wild and sold. He does not talk, he does not let anyone touch him, he just sits there. I took him to the vet an exotic bird specialist in my area. They say he can learn to do things I hope so. That is why I joined this forum I hope to learn what everyone talks about with their birds and how to handle them and teach tricks.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry about your brother. Sam is probably also mourning the loss of your brother. Parrots do that and will take some time to adjust to his new home. Thank you for helping him. For now, I would just spend time with him. Sit with him. Talk to him, even read to him. Try handfeeding him some treats and just work on building trust with him.

Welcome to you and Sam. :)

Make sure you head on down to "Amazon Avenue" and introduce Sam around. That's the place to ask questions and talk about your 'zon.

Meanwhile, we'd love to see pics!

Welcome Mike and Sam.
I'm glad he's with you and you want to improve his life. I have adopted 3 elderly Amazons (OWA & BFA) and yes, they can learn to stepup , fly, and play, and some "tricks" too.
They are food motivated and show their moods clearly in body language, so are easy to work with.
Check out positive reinforcement and clicker training topics.

Welcome. I'm sorry about your loss.

I was a new bird person too. I have 2 old wild caught zons. Secret is my avatar bird. Ornery as all get out but trains fast. If I could talk Sarah (macawnutz) into taking her on, that bird would be a star.

They do mourn.....more than we do I think. Give the bird some time and don't rush anything. You have forever. Give treats and visit with each other.....slow and steady wins the race.

I have a dozen questions about owning a parrot. His wings are clipped, he has never flown I don't plan have them clipped I will never let him go outside out side of his cage. He is over weight how much should I feed him? He lets me put my hand in his cage to change the water feed him and change his news papers. I am trying new foods I am trying to get him on a healthy diet of fresh food. I talk to him all the time I believe he trusts me he does not try to bite me. But he does grunt at me if he thinks I am going to try to touch him. He is in a cage that is too small for him. I have a good cage right next to him but he will not go in it. He does not step up he just sits in the cage as you see him in the picture. I have the top off the cage and wood perches he can step to but he does not move he just stays there. I am not forcing him to do anything right now he went to the vet (very traumatic)and has some medical issues so he is on medication and has another vet appointment.(more traumatic) I just want to do what is right and best for him.

I had an amazon that was 12 when I got her and she was very confused, hurt, and sad that she was no longer with her human. It took her a long time to trust being touched and only by one of our kids that was a teen at the time. She bonded with him so much that she would shriek if he left her sight. She shared meals with him (she had her bowl with bird friendly foods as he ate), walked around the house looking for him. She was very loving to him. She also had a mean streak like when she tried to scalp one of our other teens as they bent over next to the cage to pick something up that they dropped. Watching her eyes and body language was probably some of the best advice I got on here.

Mine get less than 1/4 cup of pellets each day and I throw away what they don't eat the next day.... I've never measured what I toss. I want them to be able to have pellets as food at all times.

In addition to that they get 3 senior nutriberries each day.

And they get some sort of fresh organic vegetable at night or when we eat dinner.

My birds are clipped but they never, ever, go out of the house unless they are secure in a travel cage.

Have you given him toys?

Just saw that he's overweight.....

Figure out how much you feed him currently. Measure in morning, measure at night the left overs. Use a tablespoon.

Try feeding more vegetables. Mine love red organic bell peppers. If they turn their beak up, wait a while and maybe they'll eat after you're not looking..... then the next time just cut them differently.

Try letting him forage. Put a bowl on bottom of the cage where he won't poo in it..... Put a favorite treat in there WHILE HE IS WATCHING! exercise helps to lose weight. If he wants the treat, let him work for it.

Sam does not have any toys. I know he is depressed and I just stay with him a lot. I talk to him gently and try not to make any sudden moves.

Do you have enough posts to send a private message yet? @Macawnutz help???? You don't want to post your address here in the forum but you can private message it to me.

I can have a friend mail you a toy that began Secret and MC on their trip to everyday life.

They didn't have toys for years either.

It's the little pop that parrots treasure sells.

My sister in law gave me a bell for him but he is not touching it.
She even has some treat on it. He does not care.

Some parrots take time to accept toys.

Mine chew wood, it's good for their beak. It has to be safe wood though. We have great vendors here. The owners of Parrots Treasure were two people I met when I rescued my Amazon's. They gave me such valuable information. They showed me how to hold the little pop by the handle and show the parrot. I dropped it in a bowl in the cage and they picked them up. It may have taken a while, that was about 6 or 7 years ago so it's hard to remember.
