Are RBPs not common in Australia? I was very surprised by the pricing of some rehomes...$1000 AUD which is about $700 USD and $3500 AUD @$2500 USD for bonded or unrelated pairs.

They’re expensive in the USA, too, due to their rarity. I’ve seen adult rehomes go for about $350-400 USD, and babies go for about twice that amount.

I've seen babies priced at about $500 in the US (average price).
They are more common than they used to be but not as common as some of the other Pois such as Senegals or Meyer's.
I don't necessarily consider them rare compared to Ruppell's. At least they aren't rare in my house. :D

I paid 495.00 + shipping for Keoki. By the way the person I got Keoki from, his website states that his pair is on eggs. Funny, it’s winter here.

RBs do breed in winter. Lucy laid a clutch in January and Mulder and Scully hatched out Feb. 14. They are my Valentine's babies, best Valentine's gift ever!

I believe it is no longer legal to import exotic birds into Australia, so there are some species of parrots we don't even have here... correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we have hawk headed parrots or hyacinth macaws for example. I think the ban was issued around some time in the 90s so all of our birds come from whatever breeding stock people had imported back then. I haven't really seen any pois, senegal, meyers etc as companion birds here... you may see some being advertised for a high price as breeding pairs but most people would prefer to get something like a macaw or amazon for the $2,000+ around here.

I'm not an expert but for what I know you don't want parrots that can survive in the wild in your country that's why it's very difficult to import parrots.
(You can not import wild birds, but pets can be imported, but not so easy. )
That will ruin your own native parrots. We also have a similar law here, their is some birds we are not allowed to have here or import.
That is why those parrots are more expensive, like Poi and Macaws. Look at the price for a Macaw!

Can't import birds into the US either unless they are pets that you've had for a while and then the rules are very strict for getting them into the country. You have to jump through a few hoops. Pois are being bred in Australia but guess not as much there as US. Senegal prices are even high.
Cockatoo prices, of course, are a lot lower in Australia than here. :)

Hi. We do have Hawk Headed Parrots. Just a few. In 2015, from memory, a pair were stolen and it made news. We don't have any Hyacinth Macaws that I know of unless you count those dodgy ads offering them for $1000 that we all know are fake. I know some people do have certain birds that they only sell to specialised breeders as they are rare.

Our problem is the gene pool is limited due to the clampdown on importation. I think the government was worried, in part, that non indigenous parrots would disturb the native species and that certain diseases would manifest here due to foreign importation hence the huge price put on those parrots already here before the ban.

There is a Hyacinth listed for sale on Gumtree for $48,000. The ad was originally placed on Feb. 2018 and updated last month.

Good gracious there is! How did I miss that one. So where there is one, there are others. I wonder if they would take a payment plan, say over 10 years? :) Thank you for setting me straight.

That's excellent! Works out well as long as he doesn't pick up bad habits from Gary. ;)
They feed of each others energy. They are out most of the day when I am home. I just moved him closer to Gary yesterday and I already see a positive difference. I put them both in their cages after being out most of the day today and Keoki just played on the bottom of his, ate, and napped some. I let him out while he was calm. Now they are both out again on the boing.

We have no imports allowed and parrots like Red Fan/ Hawk Head are very very rare and only really advertised in breeder circles. The last pair of Hy's went for over 60K I believe to an unknown person as they were sourced by a broker for the person who wished to stay anonymous. We have limited breeding stock of exotic birds due to no imports (I think there is a way around this but it is very very expensive with no guarantee of how your bird is being looked after at the quarantine facility) being allowed in for many many years.

it has been talked for the import law to be dropped for species already here, but if it did happen it would probably take a decade or more for it to go into place anyways. while exotics are expensive, thankfully natives aren't! and imo, we have some of the most beautiful natives in the bird kingdom.
