I imagine it has to be hard when you lose a companion that has been around for so many years, and 20 is plenty of time to form that companionship.
I've only had mine for a year and I'm already attached to the little guy.

Only thing positive I see from this is that you two had 20 years of that companionship, through it all you two endured. Be happy that you were able to provide the care for him over that time instead of him being with someone else who kept him in a cage all his life.
