Angel comes to me to get the casings off new feathers he can't reach. He crawls onto my lap and will scratch somewhere with his foot and there's always a feather shaft there. He'll sit and have me use my fingers to free each one. He fluffs himself up so I can see them all quite easily. Sometimes it takes over an hour. My lap will be covered with the dried milk looking little pieces.

Is this an Amazon thing or does Angel just like the extra attention? I've never had a birdie want me to do their preening for them!

Other birds do but you have to be their trusted one, or a close second if the chosen one isn't available. Nerd always had me do it and would guide my fingers where they needed to be or move his head around to the right spot. He however would allow my sister to preen him on her days off after breakfast. It was their thing together every week and I'd get a report on how it went.

Slade lets me do it and requests it, but not quite as cutely as Angel. We've developed a nice language though and if it's tender he just shakes his head a little bit and I move on to the next one.

Pionus once they decide you are trustworthy they will generally growl and either let you continue or grab a finger and move away. If they aren't quite sure about you yet you get da bites for corrections.

Angel was scratching his head so I was checking to see what was bothering him. A feather was 3/4 inch long still fully encased. So I rubbed it to remove the casing. Now he knows if he scratches his head I'll sit there and clean off all of them for him.

Tikki likes me to preen him, but he is quick to scold me if I do it 'wrong'!

All my birds have show me where to preen them with their foot.
I guess it's all about if you are interested to listen to them or not.
Eliy also rubs her head against my fingers if I couldn't find the place.

If you don't understand that their foot is showing where they wanted to be preened they will give up showing you.
You can communicate pretty well with them if you just try to realize that everything they do (say)has a purpose .
