No they cannot. Though they will try! My mom has a lovebird/cockatiel pair. And boy do they try! Cockatiel mates dont feed eachother but this lovatiel pair does!:)
Our lovebird has a fettish for olive lorikeets, Peachy tried to mate with Millow and still tries with Pikachu.
Fortunately that means we won't be getting lovie bubs as Peachy turns down Fluffy's attempts but does cause some animated arguments between them and the lorikeets as Lucy won't entertain advances on Pikachu!!!

Hello everyone. I have a budgie that I don't kno if it is a male or female and a black masked lovebird and I dnt kno what sex it is either. But my budgie is mating with my lovebird. So does that mean my budgie is a male and my lovebird is female. And is it OK they do that or should I srperate them??

Not necessarily, but it could be a good indicator.

They can't hybridize, so no need to worry about offspring.... however, it could become a problem if at least one of them is a female and starts laying eggs and becomes a chronic egg layer. That's not healthy.

It is possible, I have a peerikeet and lovebird that I thought were males but end up having 2 eggs I think. It's hard to tell cuz I just found out and I don't want to mess with her.

I didn't go back & read all the messages so i truly hope i am not out of line here but my first thought when I read the headliner on my Alerts was WHY? why would you want them to breed?

In the Philippines, budgies and lovebirds are often called parakeets, so someone may buy a lovebird from one place, then buy a "parakeet" from another place, the two breed and reproduce, and then there are chicks.... well, both parents are actually lovebirds, so the chicks are not hybrids. Still, you end up with people confused as to why two different species reproduced, when they didn't.

I think the head and neck resemble a love bird. I was on this site questioning if it was possible because my lovebird is bonded with one of male bungie.

As to the seperate question "would this be a new species of bird?" the answer is no. It would be a hybrid bird, one that is most likely sterile, like a mule (horse x donkey)

A hybrid between a lovebird and a budgie would show more lovebird characteristics. The chicks are 100% budgies.

Although there are reports of such hybrids, there has yet to be any proof of such a hybrid. The birds can mate all they want! But it's more likely for a female lovebird to have a "virgin birth" (parthenogenesis) than it is for the two species to hybridize.

Ok...this will sound stupid but why not? It is still a bird. We have different breeds of dogs breeding together, and they are still dogs. So why not a two breeds of birds, still baby birds in my book...

not something I would think anyone would do on purpose but why would it not be possible.... :think1:

Dogs are all one species... Canis lupus familiaris. Dogs breeding together is just like humans of different races procreating - we are all the same species.

Lovebirds and budgies are both in the Psittaciformes order, but are not in the same family or genus.

Budgie: Melopsittacus undulatus
Lovebird: Agapornis (8 species under this genus)

When animals are too distantly related they can't reproduce. Just as we are "closely" related to chimps but we cannot reproduce with them, so are many species of parrot very genetically diverse from one another.

When there are closely related, like conure species, they can create hybrid offspring. Similar to donkeys and horses.

Birds may all seem very similar to each other and thus seem easier to hybridize, but saying "they're all birds" is as accurate as saying "we're all mammals" :)

hi, I am checking this thread out because I have a male Blue dark edition Lovebird that has mated with the neon budgie bird and eggs started to appear and some one in the cage was destroying the eggs. i had an albino budgie as a potential mate for the neon budgie ... who I was told was male due to the blue band... I bought an incubator but I didn't really look forward to getting up every 2-3 hours to feed them.. then, I noticed that the budgie was in the nesting box and laying eggs.. I then noticed the blue band was now purple and Cobalt the blue lovie was staying in Sydney's (Sydney is the neon green, blue, yellow budgie) cage after fly time. This last fly time I got rid of Righteous who is the albino and destroying the eggs. I put her in with Mellow Yellow the canarie cause they are buds. so, this is where we are now..

The sexual stimulation is probably making the female lay eggs, but these will be infertile. A chick isn't growing inside them and they won't hatch. Egg-laying is incredibly draining on the hen so she must be on a very good diet with enough calcium, otherwise her health will suffer.

I wouldn't cage a budgie and canary together. Budgies can be aggressive and a canary has no way of fighting back against the budgie's stronger beak.

Sydney has a tan cere, therefore is female.

She is more likely to have parthenogenesis over hybridizing with a lovebird. More likely than not, the eggs will be infertile unless the albino budgie is a male (in which case should have a pink cere) and the two mated.

Blue band doesn't mean male, it means the albino was born 2017
