Please Help (Update on Esther)

I just got a phone call from the people I bird sit for. Their 1 1/2 y/o U2 fell or jumped off the counter and broke her beak. The owner says she's bleeding to death. How can I help them? What should I tell them? They asked if we had a soldering gun, not sure what for. I'm frantic. I sat for this bird all week, and everything went fine. Oh God, please tell me how to help them and Esther.

Oh, there isn't an avian vet in this town anymore. I think the closest one is in Louisville, KY. If someone could help us find a good vet near here that would help too.

Brigid I would think they need to apply pressure if possible and get their bird to an avian vet right away. Do you need help finding them a vet?

Have them wrap the bird in a towel and apply pressure to the beak to stop the bleeding and call/go to an emergency vet.

Try and relax!

Put a paste of cayenne pepper on the area bleeding and apply pressure. Mix the cayenne in to paste form with water. It will stop the bleeding and any ingested will help with pain.

Wow, how awful :( Bless that poor bird - thank goodness you've got a vet nearby. I've gone to the site - looks excellent to me.

A soldering gun? I certainly hope they were just in shock and not serious about using it on the bird.:(

Please keep us posted as possible, Brigidt - what a horrible feeling that must be. :(

Brigid let us know if we should keep looking. Gary gave you some good advice but they should still take her to the vet.

Have them get flour into a bowl ASAP and insert beak into the bowl.
Staying calm will go a longs ways in helping this bird.
and don't let the bird near any source of water (that would make the flour & clotting NOT work)

Apply very gentle pressure; not too firm, as the beak will be painful.
Use the flour again if there's still active bleeding.

Do not use quick stop...or any such thing on the beak.
Flour should slow the bleeding till a vet can be located.

The main thing is to get and keep the bird CALM and warm.Try to apply Cayenne pepper to the bleeding area,If necessary, put the Cayenne pepper in a cloth or small bowl to allow for getting it to the bleeding area. Find a QAV as soon as possible.Keeping the Bird(and Herself) Calm will be a Big Factor in getting the bleeding to stop.

oh no :( how much of the beak broke off? A vet would of course be the best bet but Im thinking they are wanting the soldering gun to cauterize it? I hope that they can get the bleeding stopped with pressure and cayenne pepper. I hope one of the vets listed is within a close distance so they can get her help.
