I few minutes ago I found Pickpocket, my Budgie, dangling from her neck and foot from a play stand!

She had silk threads wrapped around her neck and one of her feet. She was limp and didn't make a sound. Her foot was completely restricted and one toe has started turning black. I have no idea how long she has been hanging there!!! The last time I saw her was this morning before work. I only saw her when I got home!!! She must have been hanging herself for hours!!!

I cut the silk that was attached to the stand. I unwrapped the silk from her neck.

I then gave her 0.2ml of Meloxicam to help with the pain.

She was very limp the whole time!!!

I managed to get all the threads untangled from her foot. Most of it had cut through the toes. There was blood. Her one toe definitely looks broken and the other is almost black.

I've given her Poly-aid Plus (http://www.vetafarm.com.au/products/POLY%252dAID-PLUS-80g.html) as well as 0.5ml of water because that is all that I could safely get down her throat.

She is now on a heat pad in a quiet and dark room.

I'm scared to handle her guys!!! She is so weak and so limp. Her wings are completely droopy and the one dropping she passed is completely made up of urates.

It is 11:30pm here. I can take her to the Emergency Vet, but they do not specialise in birds. They say they can give her pain medicine and heat until I can take her to my avian vet. I've given Pickpocket these, but should I take her anyway?

My avian vet opens at 9:00am but they take calls from 8:30am. I'll be at their doors at 9:00am so I'll phone them on the way over there so that they can prepare for my arrival. It should be no problem for them to see me without an appointment because it is an emergency.

I don't know if Pickpocket will make it through the night! She is so limp.

I feel sick to my stomach to think what she has endured.

What else can I do for her?

OMG, I am so sorry, that is horrible! :( Sounds to me like you've done everything for her that you could, now you just have to wait for the vet. What about food, have you tried giving her any food? I know you said you could barely get .05 ml of water down her throat.. but if she is passing only urates, perhaps you could somehow whip up a batch of homemade mash or formula and try to give her some of that?

I am so sorry Kelsey

keep her warm, quiet and hydrated, I wouldn't focus too much on food right now in case the vet needs to do a procedure in the morning - he might want her crop emptier

you can give her the tiniest drop of white corn syrup for energy when giving fluids

we are here for you

Thank you so much guys.

I'm so horrified that this could happen to my baby. I'm absolutely sick to my stomach.

Pickpocket wears a collar and it restricts her flying capabilities. She must have landed on the floor of the (supposedly) bird safe room. The silk threads are from the curtain in the room so I assume she tried to use the curtains to climb up to the cage.

A loose thread must have tangled around her neck and foot and she would have panicked. I imagine she flew to the play stand and got caught in that too. Then she was left to dangle from it until I found her hours later.

I'm worried about stressing her out a lot with a trip to the E-vet now because it will mean a car trip, bright lights and lots of handling.

I've lost one bird from shock before. I'm terrified of losing Pickpocket from it as well.

I just need her to be alright. If you guys could keep her in your thoughts and prayers, that would be nice. Thank you.

((((HUGS))))....she is in my thoughts and prayer.

Since you are just seeing urates, this means either no food in the GI tract which can lead to GI stasis. If you have a healthfood store close by you can get 2 herbal extracts: gentian and capsicum. A drop of each can be added to the fluids you are orally trying to give her for hydration. They will work synergistically (not sure of spelling) to aid in warming the body and act as a natural anitbiotic to slow down secondary pathegens induced from stress, and also stimulate appetite and movement of the GI tract. A drop of hiney or Karo syrup will also give some energy.

I would agree- even a dog/cat vet can put a bird in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, which can make it easier for her to get oxygen.

You are doing a fine!

I would recommend taking the bird to your vet ASAP. whether an avian or general vet both can provide oxygen and give Sub-Q fluids. For fluids I would opt for Ringers with 5% dextrose.

If it is to risky to move the bird I would suggest keeping the bird hydrated, warm not hot and hydrated Only give the bird fluids or food by mouth if it can keep it down. My suggestion for the best herbs is Arnica and Astragalus.

Soft music may also help.

I will be keeping Pickpocket in my thoughts.
Miracle, one of my old budgies, fell into a bucket of water once. I'm not sure how long she was in there but when I took her out she was completely limp like Pickpocket. I dried her off, and put her in a hospital cage with a heating pad. The next morning, I thought for sure I was going to find her dead, but instead she was perky and acting like nothing had happened. I brought her into the vet and she said that she was completely unscathed and hadn't even breathed in any water.
I hope Pickpocket will be as lucky. :hug8:
