Is it okay to use old newspaper on the bottom of my cockatiel cage? My male loves to shred it but I'm a bit worried that the ink might be poisonous

I tend to err on the side of caution and use blank newspaper instead, especially since my tiels also love to tear up the paper. You can find some at Staples or UPS stores. It is usually sold as wrapping/packing paper for moving. It works really well, and I actually prefer it since it gives the cage a cleaner look.

We mostly use paper towels, but in the US, newspaper should be fine. It's all soy-based ink now.

I also get free newspaper in the mail, either use that or paper towels. Nothing bad has happened while I had newspaper in the cage.

The best thing to do is cut a stack of newspaper to fit the bottom pan, then just take the top one or two sheets off when cleaning the cage. We used to do this until we stopped getting newspapers.

Our newspapers are a third of the size we used to get, so when you have as many cages as I have to change, you have to scrounge. Luckily the neighborhood helps a lot. When I need to, I use paper towels. I use puppy training pads in the bottom of some cages because it is harder for them to rough it up and make a real mess.
