Property has a multi burner fire, no central heating at all.
Now my flock would be upstairs, another room & the chimney doesn’t go past their room.
I’m most worried about fumes coming off the fire place, what’s best to use?
we’ve never owned one before so really cautious.
We’re going to have to buy plug in heaters aswell to avoid freezing to death

As long as it was installed to the building code it should be fine. Does it have glass doors on it? Does it have "vents" on the fireplace face that throw heat? (modern 2 chamber system) This system is actually efficient and heats the home.

When the fireplace is burning everything goes up the chimney. Including a lot of warm hair from the room. If it's just a single old style firebox it's the total opposite of efficient.

The only danger is when starting a fire in a "cold" fireplace/chimney. There is a chance of blowback until the chimney gets hot and starts creating a draw. With gas there is no smoke to worry about.

I have two natural gas heaters in my living room and it's just fine. Natural gas burns clean and only gives off water vapor. I don't know about other types of fuel such as propane
