Hello, I was thinking of getting a English budgie who was rescued and had mites. The owner said that he got rid of the mites by himself without bringing the budgie to the vet. Now the bird is happy and healthy, growing his feathers back beautifully.

Is it indeed possible to remove mites without going to the vet? And is it a possibility that he may still have mites?

I would take him to the nearest avian vet just for general check up.

Are these scaly face mites? If so, these are treated with ivermectin which can acquired without a prescription quite easily. Many budgie sites have instructions on how to treat to such mites. However it's important to get the budgie checked by a vet because you really don't know what type of situation she/he came from and if other diseases are present. Additionally the treatment might not have been enough to fully eradicate the mites, so the budgie can have the symptoms reemerge and require further treatment.

Yes, it is possible to get rid of mites without going to the vet, as mentioned above.

Some people will treat their birds once or twice a year, even if there are no visible signs of mites. Be sure to clean and sanitize his toys, perches and entire cage after a treatment, that way the mites are completely eradicated.

What do you use to remove all types of bird mites?

He's a beauty!

Ivermectin is typically used to get rid of mites, or other products like "Scat".

It's usually a topical treatment, putting a drop or two between the birds wings or on the thigh.
