Hello- I would do anything to keep my 1.5 year old Linnie parrot healthy and happy - she is a cronic egg layer - I've tried natural remedies - she's has been egg bound and holds everything in - she even laied a no egg shell with assistance from the vet and a healthy egg 2 days later with help of antibiotics and liquid calicum - there saying lupron is my only choice - to keep her healthy happy and alive - I just want to know I'm doing the right best thing - I'm so afraid of side effects - if anyone knows about lupron in birds vs cronic egg laying and any possibility of it being a good or bad decision- right now I think it's the only one I have - I would just like some positive feedback from anyone who's Linnie bird has been treated with this for cronic egg laying before????? please and thank you so so much

Have never dealt with Lupron but there are others here who have so hope you get a response soon. Just want to wish the best for your linnie.

When it comes to medicine regardless whether it is human or avian, it all comes down to risk management. A qualified doctor/vet has to weigh the risk of treatment vs the risk of non-treatment. With birds, egg-binding is risky because it can lead to death. So I am guessing this is why your vet feels that Lupron is worth the risk.

I have heard of birds that are on Lupron for a long time. Perhaps there are some AA members that can tell you about there bird's and if there are noticeable effects to being on that drug.

The egg looks sort of deflated, did the vet use a procedure called ovocentesis. That is when they stick a needle into the egg and remove some of the liquid contents of it?

Yes she couldn't pass it...she was swollen purple out of breath ......so the vet drained it thinking it would then absorb back into her but luckily she passed it the next day then laid a normal egg 2 days later

I don't have a linnie but my cockatiel Emily was a chronic egg layer. Initially Lupron helped but after 5 or 6 shots, was ineffective. So we did suprelorin implants which was put in under anesthesia (quick). No eggs. After four implants she developed cancer of the ovaries and sadly passed away. I miss her so much. She was my constant companion :(

I'm sorry about your Linnie being a chronic egg layer. I'm so glad you were able to help her in time with her bound egg. I'm sorry I haven't any advice about Lupron, but I hope it works out!

I think it's meant to be ESA for emotional support animal. :)

OP: I hope the lupron helps. I have no experience in it myself, but it sounds like you're in good hands.

Please know that you are making the best decision you can under difficult circumstances. Chronic egg laying is not going to help her, and the Lupron might. Sending lots of love from Minneapolis, and wishes for great results.
