I have the sweetest little caique. He is 5 yes old and I have had him since he was about 4 months old I am thinking about another one or maybe raising them. I have raised cockatiels so I am aware of the dedication to them I was just wondering if anyone here has raised them and what their experience was ! ? !

I have two, 1 yr and 1 1/2 years!
Have not bred, and do not intend to. My understanding is, though, that pet caiques make lousy parents and are difficult to breed. They also learn childcare from other caiques, so having at least 3 breeding pairs is recommended. Pet pairs tend to not feed their babies, making hand feeding from day one necessary (so, feeding every 1.5 hours=no sleep for you for several weeks) It's one reason they are more expensive than some other similarly sized birds.
They also do best when they pick their own mate. That's why three of each sex is recommended. You set them up as young birds and allow them to pair off naturally, then seperate them. Right now, getting a young caique and expecting your 5 year old to choose it as a mate is a long shot. Kind of like putting a toddler in a room with a 25 year old and expecting them to be best friends, and eventually make babies together.

Welcome!

I have six caiques :) They are so fun. All are pets and I have had them since they were babies. I keep them in pairs and one pair has had two clutches of babies.

I raised parrotlets before the caiques, with a break in between. Caring for baby caiques is way different and a much longer commitment.

I love it though. You can not fool with anything less than pro equipment and you can have to be willing to feed from day one (it is not always necessary but especially with inexperienced parents it is likely). There is a learning curve for sure, but I like it.

Plus if you start with babies be prepared to wait 3-5 years for them to breed.

The good news is all my birds are friendly and tame and the ones who had babies were tame throughout. The male is super protective right before the hen lays eggs so for about a week I couldn't handle the parents. Other than that they are still fun to handle. That is my experience though it is only with a few pairs.
