A good avian vet will be prepared for things like that. @TWR is your way and might have a good vet recommendation for you. I'm sure they'll understand the situation if you explain it to them. My vet (I'm in Bris) also offers behavioural and training consults, so you could ask about that as well.

thank you. i'm in australia, i dunno if it costs money to get checkups done on birds? i hope the vet can give me some good advice about space and training. there is actually a chance ricky is female, trainer told us he was male but i don't really trust that guy.

Avian vets tend to be somewhat pricey. You would be wasting your cash if you took him to a regular vet though. My vet up here in Brisbane (Brisbane Bird Vet) runs at about $90 for a consultation, which doesn't include any tests. My first wellness visit (yearly vet appointment - you should definitely look into doing these) for my two birds was $700, but that included a lot of one offs (microchip, heart worm medication, some specialised tests, anaesthesia, etc). So, not cheap, but worth it. Birds are very talented at hiding illness.

Here is a pic of my ringneck who is 6 months old on my avatar. I am working through the same type of issues, he is very scared. I will say that I received the same advise as you did when I joined. Go slow do not approach too fast, take a step back from cage when he looks panicked. My guys is not ready for me to put hands on the cage yet, he will not even eat in front of me unless I am a good 8-10 feet away. I do drop treats in the bowl when I do approach. He loves pear, apple, banana and sweet potato(cooked). Congrats on your new birdie.
