Jardine - leg surgery, dead toes?

Hello members, sorry for the long post but I was hoping someone here might have experience with regaining function of toes after a traumatic leg injury?

I was recently surrendered a 6 month old Jardine parrot with an abnormal leg due to the owners lack of time to properly care for him. Apparently he was shipped here to Ontario from BC and she was told by the breeder he was born this way.
I was very suspicious upon seeing him that this story might not be true.
I took him to the avian specialist at the University of Guelph 2 weeks ago to have him assessed and the xray told a sad story :(
His leg was obviously broken at some point and no attempt was made to stabilize it so it healed on a 90° angle and he was weight bearing on his ankle (which was inflammed and calloused).
He also shows signs of metabolic bone disease on xrays so they suspect poor nutrition when he was very young.

Long discussion later and the vet thought he had a very good chance of regaining the almost normal use of his leg after surgery.
He had surgery on Thurs and he came home Sat evening.

Now to the issue, he is dragging the toes on that foot and doesn't appear to be trying to grip/perch with them at all. They also feel slightly colder than the toes on his other foot.
At discharge the vet said it may take a bit until he is using them because of the surgery/swelling in his leg so we are doing gentle physio on his toes for now.
I am pretty scared he's lost use of those toes which might make putting him through all this and the money spent/to be spent at bandage changes /rechecks/xrays not worth it.

Has anyone ever been through anything similar with a bird?? I would love to hear from you!!

Your story reminds of what happened to another member I think I was scammed ! | Avian Avenue Parrot Forum

Grrrr...Bad breeders drive me crazy!! :shake:
I wish I could help you more. But there are other members with birds that have some kind of disability with their legs. I'm sure they can offer you a lot advice

I wouldn't worry too much about his toes. Try to save them if you can of course. But there are lots of parrots out there with missing toes sadly. Thankfully most of them seem to get along fine and adjust without them. I knew a goffin that had a couple of toes bitten off by a ferret :( But she did pretty well without them :)

Was the leg stabilized with anything while it heals? Cool toes could be from reduced circulation.if he is dragging them, may have a little .nerve damaged from the surgery it will take some time to regain use of his foot. Wren took a while to use her foot again after a femur break, but I don't recall cold toes. Best call the vet and ask. As for the bone disease, give extra calcium as in liquid form for the water and cuttlebone ,itll keep it from getting worse
I hope he's gonna be ok.

Sorry about your Jardine's leg/foot. Sad that his ex-humans did not do right by him, but he's in a good place now with you. Let us know what the vet has to say.

Thank you all for your concern - trust me, I have been speaking to my vet everyday and they aren't really sure how things will go.
His leg is stabilized with an external fixator at this point for at least 6 weeks.
He is currently dragging the toes but I was not too suprised by that based on the size of bandage he has on his leg.
I am trying to remember that he will do fine even if the function of the toes doesn't come back but somehow I still feel guilty as they were working before surgery.
Thank you BirdBabe for sharing your experience!!
I will ask my vet about calcium supplementation for the bone disease.

It is possible that the toes/foot will be functional again. Even if they are not he will be able to adapt. Sending positive thoughts for the Jardine. What is his name, btw? Thank you for helping him.

I hope so - his first owner was told he would adapt to the crooked leg as well but he didn't. I think it was too painful for him to really put any of his weight on.
His named is Naveed :)

I have xray pics from before and after surgery but unsure if they can be posted here.

I think you'll be fine but if you think they're gruesome you can ask a mod to put a warning graphic pictures banner on the thread name. I did it when I posted pictures of my mashed toes on my I mashed my toes thread and it was added for me so nobody saw something they weren't expecting.
I hope he regains the use of his toes but yes if not he'll adapt and get around fine. We raised a baby house finch that ended up loosing several toes partially and getting a foot broken that tightened up into a ball and she got around just fine and could do pretty much anything she could before.

You can post the pictures of the x-rays here if you wish.

Here are a picture of him before surgery as well as his pre and post surgery rads. I am sure you can see the crazy curve in the affected bone on the first xray as well as the 90° angle and rotation of the bottom of the leg in the 2nd xray.

Thanks for sharing; those who have experience with birds with missing toes!! I am feeling much better about Naveed's situation. Just hoping the fracture can heal and he can bear some weight on this leg eventually.

Give it time, he still has five more weeks to heal and it is too early to assess how things will go. Is he on any anti inflammatory/pain meds? Also do you have him in a modified small cage to allow him restricted attempts to climb and put stress on his leg? I did have a baby Quaker that had a leg issue and with a month of being collared and wrapped leg support (like a sling) it did heal but continues to walk with a limb, one year later she is in a new home with a nice roomy cage and perches setup so each level has a perch to progress as she goes up high. Lots of cotton rope for good grip too. She is doing amazing. So allow the time for the leg to heal and then think about exercise once the healing has taken. Water therapy (hold him gently in a towel and run warm water over the leg a few times a day, for a couple weeks) is also a good treatment to stimulate muscles after his bandages are off in six weeks.

Thanks parrotluv, my vet agreed that it will probably be 8 weeks before we see the full outcome of Naveed's leg and toes.
He is on anti-inflammatories, pain meds, antibiotics and some eye meds for an ulcer.
He is also having his bandaged changed every 2-3 days right now.
I am sad to say that everything he has been through since getting here has made him terrified of me but I am hoping we can get through this and then I can try to regain his trust.
He is in a large cage but I have modified it so he can perch comfortable just a few inches from the cage bottom and I have soft blankets underneath.
His perches are also wrapped with vetrap to try to stop him from developing sores on the good foot.
The water therapy sounds soothing - will definitely try that once the bandages are off.

I see a teeny bit of pitting in the bones, but. It's not bad.. wow, that's quite a curve in that leg! Hope he heals quickly, give him kisses from all of us.

You mean his metabolic bone disease doesn't look too bad to you?

LOL - If I give him a kiss, I will probably have a new lip piercing but I will tell him lots of people are pulling for him

No, it dosent, I've seen way worse where the bones look like Swiss cheese. I was gonna say give him a kiss for us, but we don't want you getting a lip piercing..
