I'll get picture in minute. I woke up sicker then all get out this AM. the one I have is macaw sized but because it's so stretched out it useless. I brought it home because Rocky was sick and fighting me beak and talon, I was going to make a smaller one for him. then he finally got use to the routine of meds. Dr. Barb bought them at Walgreens for the big birds. they have pocket inside the wrap to put warm packs in, because people were abandoning birds in the dead of winter. it was way to warm them up quickly.
I used my bed teddy bear Theabeara to show you.
Thea's arms are the wings of the bird.

Dr. Barb says the one the wings are tucked in the bird seem not to fight as much.

That's so cool! Interesting about the heat packs, too. Makes me sad that people would dump animals in such conditions. :(

there hasn't been as much dumping this winter, Thanking God. Dr. Barb has signage around the clinic, posting that anyone dumping any animal or bird will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. she also put in security cameras all the way around the building too.

Booklet for the clinic put on hold for the time being... | Avian Avenue Parrot Forum

we have even bigger wraps at the farm for lambs. if they are born outside they can freeze to death within the hour. the heat packs for the wraps at the farm are put into the clothes dryer for 5 to 10 minutes and stay warm for several hours. it saves lives.

Update time:
the 2 budgies and 2 tiels will be able to find new homes. their swabs came back clean as a whistle, no scary diseases. they have moved out of the quarantine area.
the news is not so good for Mr. CAG. he has had several severe seizures in the last couple of days. and is now living in incubator. his calcium levels are either sky high or almost nill. there is no middle ground right now. his swabs came back with no Aspers or PBFD indications. he may have diabetes and they are doing blood work daily checking his sugar levels. his liver values are off also. they are testing for heavy metals and Fatty liver disease also. he is still fighting beak and talon every moment of the day. there is a small chance that the next seizure could take him out also. Dr. Tony, Nick and one other tech have been staying with him nightly. one of them stays in the quarantine room at all times.
I am suppose to go tomorrow to the clinic if "G" is feeling up to it. she had same day surgery on Thursday for minor bowel obstruction. she is doing fine but a bit achy.

ok UPDATE time for Mister:
he does not have heavy metals in his blood and no fatty liver disease. tomorrow he is getting a free Cat Scan and MRI at the U of M vet clinic. After doing leg band research, we found out he is only 7 years old. Dr. Tony said it's all the more reason to find out what the blazes is going on with him internally. they are providing calcium for him on daily basis, to keep his levels at proper concentration. his weight is coming up nicely and he is eating a little bit of food daily on his own. his old cage has been scrubbed within inches of it's life and F-10 several times. all the perches have been washed, dried and F-10 too. new dishes thru out the cage. there is no sign of Diabetes either. (amazing for all the garbage he had been eating). his super clean cage in now in front of the incubator, so he can see it. after reading all of this in email, I sent back a reply. 'I am wondering if all of his problems are more mental then anything else. yes the calcium issue is physical and the cause to the seizures, but his mental statues has been a huge factor for him also. he loved Myrtle and she is no longer a part of his life, could this be separation anxiety and stress from the move?' what does everybody else think here ???

Poor guy! Only 7 years old! And already going through so much stress! With everything that's going on, it's hard to say what could be medical vs mental, sometimes. :(

if he has no diseases maybe they will take him out of quarantine. in his own house, he was in front of windows and had people who were not in face masks, caps and gowns. maybe this is what is freaking him out. just my thoughts.....

Poor bird!:( I'm sure it's physiological and medical. Hopefully with more time and care he will slowly start to get better. I hope he gets out of quarantine soon.

ok, another UPDATE on Mister:
after sedating the little man, he went thru the cat scanner then was brought out of sedation. they found absolutely nothing wrong with him. and because it took until lunch time for the Dr. to read thru all the scans. every body went to lunch including Mister (although he was not allow to eat/ drink anything). he was fairly well behaved the whole time they were in lunch area. once the MRI was set up and he was sedated again. he passed that with flying colors also. so he gets to come out of quarantine. YAY!!!!!
because of all the new world birds that come to work with their parrents. he will be kept back in the kitchenette area in the bird side of clinic. he will be given a bath(shower) and will be still on small tube feeding for 2 meals a day. this way they can give him his dosages of calcium. he was very good boy and is in his cage again. according to Dr. Tony there was only one string of cuss words from him the whole time he was at the U of M.

I say certainly he's very mad and upset about loosing his friend so yes it could be at least some of his issues. Lurch was very upset and mad at the world when I got him after having his very elderly owner taken away then put in a room by himself, and later sold to the lady I got him from. You know it took him most of 5 years to mostly decide I/we were OK and trustworthy but he did get there begrudgingly. For him biting was just a feature though he did a lot less of it at the end and was following me around when I tried to leave the room. Once his health issues get settled I bet eventually he'll start opening up to his chosen ones and things will slowly get better for everyone.

I forgot to add there is a huge window in the kitchenette above the sink. that side of the building is on south/ south west side and there is sunlight from about 10:30 in the morning on thru the day. at night the clinic close the window with huge shutters inside and they lock it too.

got email on Mister CAG.
"today Dr. Paul was in with out Monster YNA. he went back into the kitchenette to meet Mister. of course Mister had to start out the meeting with a long string of racialist cuss words. (this was part of the reason I covered him when we first left the house he lived in. I was afraid as loud as he is, that he could be heard outside of the van.) Dr. Paul turn and walked away immediately, he went to visit with Fast Freddy, leaving the door to the kitchenette open, so Mister could see all the attention Fast Freddy was getting including treats. this will be what we use from now on to stop Mister and his potty mouth. this is what we did with Monster too, when all he could do was cuss us out for helping him. Fingers crossed that Mister get the idea as fast as Monster did."

I was at the clinic today, mostly to clean cages of all critters, birds, cats and two very antsy dogs. the birds were first of course. Mister was move to java tree so I could clean his cage. he is a very good smearer of food. I had to get putty knife to get some of it off. he was cussing up a storm, each time he spewed out of his beak, I left the room. he will call you back sweetly, but I didn't return 3 times. I played with Fast Freddy. it make me sad that he has learned such foul language, it will be hard to place him in new home any time soon.
the budgies have gone to their new home and the tiels are pending right now. there is another cockatiel being boarded right now, very sweet. all cages clean, F-10ed and forging treats set up for them to find. Mister was not happy about going back into his cage, took Nick to get him back in the cage.
Kitty haven has mama cat and her 4 kittens, plus a very loud Siamese that is being board for spring break. he is the purrrrrrrrrr champ right now, just glad to have anybody stop and pet him. the dog area has 2 yippy yappy little something from good neighborhood and I think Shih Tzu. any who how, they needed to be taken outside for a walk. not sure who was walking who:walkdog1::walkdog1: but I finally had to stand my ground and tell them to take care of their business. then they poked along slower then sap in December. Nick cleaned their kennel while I was out Sasha & Squeaky. I got the 2 poking puppies inside.
Dr. Paul and Monster bird came for lunch, along with Missy the M2, Fast Freddy, Dr. Tony's Peace, Dr. Barb's Charlie and Petey. I brought parrot cookies for their dessert. we humans had salad and pizza, the birds had chop and some greens. I was glad to get home and take my 2 out on the deck in their cages.

Update time:
Mister is doing ok, he is living in the kitchenette most of the time. of course his potty mouth is still running hard and fast. when he is being a good boy he is rewarded with treats and lots of praise. he is still getting 2 very small tube feedings a day, mostly to make sure he is getting his calcium. he is eating mash, chop, forging for some treats. he is going thru shredders like there is no tomorrow. Dr. Paul has been at the band saw nightly cutting up phone books. I have save gift wrap tubes for over 2 years and they will be going to clinic with "G" this week. I took four out 20 tubes, and made a rain stick that they can add pellets and some seeds in for Mister. they will wrap it in multi layers of newspaper for another shredder.

Quick update: Mister will be going home with one of the techs for holiday weekend. She lives out in the boonies with no close neighbors. She is a bit nervous about taking him home but he likes her a lot. Monday Morning, Dr. Barb is having carpal tunnel surgery on her right hand. she has had problems for months with numbness and a lot of pain. it has gotten so bad that she can't do stitching for surgery. she will out for 4 weeks.

Red Factor = Born with the coloration and can be reproduced within future offspring

Red Suffusion = Unnatural coloration that is caused due to diet, plucking, mutilation, health, or?

Most african greys in the USA have red suffusion - most often caused by plucking out feathers which damages the feather follicles, thus resulting in abnormal coloration of new feathers coming in.

Some babies are also born with "red diapers", but this doesn't make the chicks 'red factor', as the coloration molts out as the birds develop into adults.

PBFD and liver failure can also result in red feathers. I'm sure other health issues could result in red coloration.

The famous Alex even had one red feather on his neck. He didn't get this red feather until after a plucking incident...
Wow. Thank you for that. I adopted two African greys last year.
And the one George came to me with no feathers.
He now has feathers, but there is a lot of red feathers coming through, which looks odd.
My other grey looks normal and lovely.
So your explanation now makes sense.
