So I'm the the process of making a tree stand for my two burdies (tookie and pika) I'm building it on the top of my bunk bed. It's going to be on the top bunk so I need something to catch there droppings. I plan on using plywood cause it nice and cheap. So I can etheir use (MDF, hardwood plywood, OSB) and I dont know witch one whould be safest to use

MDF - Absorbant (difficult to clean properly) and chewable. Possibly toxic binders.
Ply - Absorbant, chewable if they can get to the edge. Splinters (WILL DO DAMAGE IF SWALLOWED)
OSB - Treated with chemicals (toxic) so not so absorbant. Bit rough.

IF you could wrap the board with a tough vinyl then you could use any of them.

Plywood has glue between layers so it is not a safe wood for birds. Cheap is not always the way to go. How about PVC?

If you're just using it as a platform to replace the mattress then any plywood is fine. You're probably going to cover it with paper anyway.

MDF is made of sawdust. It's very heavy because it's dense. If it gets wet it will puff up and disintegrate back to sawdust. OSB will also start puffing up if it gets wet. Not as fast as MDF but it will.

I would use construction grade spruce or fir plywood. Protect/disguise any spots they may chew.

(My birdcave is covered in plywood that has been chewed on for years).

Can you post pics when you make it? I’m planning on making a stand for Yoshi.

A little late but Purebond is a brand of plywood that doesn’t use formaldehyde and is lower in vocs. I researched it for making bedroom furniture for my daughter.
