I was sitting in my living room today when I heard Ponyo screaming. I rushed up and saw that she had her beak caught up to her cere in the 5/8 space cage bars and was frantically flapping and trying to free it. I was able to free her, but now she has a indent and slight wound on her cere in two spots (see picture).

The picture doesn't make it look like a big deal, but it's a raw dark pink now that looks slightly moist. She never bled, but it looks raw and damaged. We're both pretty shaken.

Has anyone had experience with this before? Will the cere heal on it's own or is there a risk for infection?

I think she is going to have a sore beak..you might want to give her soft foods for a couple of days...watch the area for any coloration change in the skin...bruising....don't see any "cracking" to the upper beak and that is good...:hug8:

Oh my! Glad you were home, Soft foods and rub a bit of A&D ointment or aloe vera on it for a few days. Poor baby.

Thank you for the input! I made her a giant batch of mash yesterday. Good timing I guess.

Is some bruising to be expected? I will make sure to watch the area. I think I might have come out of this more damaged than her :( I'm so nervous now.

awww, hope she feels better quickly!:hug8:
You know we always worry about bars being too wide that heads can go though, i never considered bars being insufficiently wide for beaks to not get stuck
So now, different cage?

You've read my mind! I have been shopping for a new cage for close to two months now for Pony's adult cage and was basing my final decision on bar space. I had narrowed it down to 3/4 bar spacing that was slightly smaller, or one that had 5/8 bar spacing, but was huge. Good thing I didn't order it yet!

I need to find a good balance between so big it will cause injury or not big enough to be safe.
*sighs* back to the drawing board.

One of the baby Indian Ringnecks had a similar injury when he ran into the curtains and it gave him a cut on his cere, it healed up nicely. I hope Ponyo's heals quickly!

And re bar spacing, Keiba is in a cage that has I think 2.5 bar spacing.

Oh that's good to hear :) I was very worried, especially when it happened.

I'm not sure I understood the 2.5...is that in inches? So 2 1/2 inches?

Looks like she should be fine. Squeeky had a cere injury from a night fright and it took a few days to completely heal up.
