Well, the little guy arrived today!

I am a nervous wreck. To be honest. Need some input from the healthy hawkhead owners. Since my only experience with this type of bird was with a sick one, there's a few new questions.

He seems real nippy. Now I know this is his first day, so maybe it's all just a bit much for him right now, but he does like to grab fingers. He steps up good! And he enjoys being cuddled under your chin, but the nippy-ness has me a little concerned. Is this similar to Macaw-type behavior and treated as such? This bird is non-stop, I swear. The energy level is pretty crazy. I can see why they compare them to caiques.

I'm also worried about cross contamination with the birds. Like i'm afraid I'm going to neglect Mopar because I handled the hawkhead and vice versa. All because I'm paranoid. I probably shouldn't be, as the new bird came form a place that screens them and checks for viruses. And Mopar was at the vet not long ago, but I am still paranoid. IDK why I do this to myself. LOL....

Anyways, attached are a few photos of the new guy! I still don't have a name for him.

OMG :jawdrop1: he is adorable! I know nothing about HHs, but I think you should just relax...only one day. He's stepping up so that's a big plus. Just give him time to get used to his new home :hug8:

Babies can be nippy for awhile, and he doesn't know you from adam. It's up to you to show him kindness, and gently teach him not to be nippy. You are the momma now. :)
Huge congrats...he is gorgeous.

Congrats on the acquisition of your new Hawk Head as he looks like a little ripsnorter...BUT
  1. Maintain Quarantine to the best of your ability; and
  2. No medical history compares to that which you, yourself, has commissioned and therefore unless you've seen the actual vet results you are better off to assume it hasn't been done. It's not just HH's health at stake here, but also Mopar's. When it comes to things that require remittance to a third party then I recommend abiding by the policy of "If you believe nothing you hear and half of what you see, then you'll get by just fine".
Now off down to the AV and good luck with him. :)

Thank you! I will Definately be slow and steady with him. :).

It's hard not to just go grab him and cuddle all day, but I also know he needs his space right now, too!

One more question. How much do your hawkheads screech? He is screeching A LOT, and I'm not sure if it's Becuase he's scared of the new surroundings, wants attention or maybe something else? I don't want to run to him everytime he does it. Like I said, the other bird, who was sick, barely made any noise. So I really don't know what's "normal". Per se. Thank you all for the advice!

Target only screeches when she's happy, sooo... :p When she's upset, she doesn't make a peep. She's not a baby though :wacky:
