SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!

I bought a Cockatiel in January this year and noticed him scratching alot. Last night I looked up online Home Remedies for pet bird mites and found a woman talking abt this issue with her Cockatiels and how she freed them of mites and has been doing this for 20 years and has never had mite problem again.

Her instructions:
Make a bath water with 1/2 cup warm water & 1/2 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar and bath/soak your bird for several minutes.
Then towel dry then
Then put Olive Oil in a Spray Bottle and spray your bird thoroughly.
I did everything exactly as instructions said and NOW MY BIRD IS WHEEZING AND WONT SIT ON HIS PERCH AND IS ON CAGE FLOOR IN FAR CORNER!!
HE WONT TALK, SING, DANCE, PLAY WITH HIS TOYS OR EVEN EAT NOW!

PLEASE HELP!!!
WHAT DO I DO!!!
COTY IS MY BEST FRIEND
WE DO EVERYTHING TOGETHER
Every morning he gets up singing and talking and playing with his toys and bells.
And now he is lifeless just on cage floor sitting in far corner of cage.
He won't eat either which is not Coty because Coty eats 24 hours.

SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME

I CANT LOSE MY BEST FRIEND
I HAVE NO FAMILY OR FRIENDS AND LOST MY JOB IN MAY.
COTY IS EVERYTHING TO ME

PLEASE HELP !!!!
PLEASE!!!

SORRY FOR ANY ERRORS OR ALL CAPS I AM A HYSTERICAL NERVOUS WRECK RIGHT NOW

PS: Before this I bath Coty every night before bedtime with no problems. He loves water/bath time.

Are you sure she has mites?

Some birds are very sensitive to certain items...Like olive oil on feathers(which I would never recommend trying at home). I would definitely say take him to a vet asap.
Maybe see if he'll take a clean water bath voluntarily? I can't imagine olive oil is comfortable, even in diluted doses, when being sprayed on.

Also, as others have said, do you know it's mites? Because itching and scratching can be many other things...

There is a warning around the internet right now about vinegar being heated because someone ran vinegar through the dishwasher and a bird died. Now, there are a lot of different theories about what actually happened, but there is currently no science behind the warning. Vinegar is safe to use, whether white or apple cider, and can be used for the water. I would not spray birds with anything except water.

Someone please help!
I am very weak from crying
Don't know what to do.

I have a Cockatiel named Coty
He was scratching alot so I L9 Ed up home Remedies for pet bird mites.
It said to make bath water with:
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
Soak bird for several minutes
Then towel dry
Then put Olive Oil in a Spray Bottle and spray bird then put him in his cage.

I did this last night
Today bird is on cage floor tucked in corner of cage.
He won't sing, dance, play with his toys or eat.

Extremely worried.
Coty is my best friend and I can't imagine my life w/o him.
We do everything together.

If anyone has any advice please help.
If this was wrong and you think Coty is going to die please let me know. I need to know what to expect.
I am very stressed and crying all day non stop.

Thank you.

50 50 Sounds like too much vinegar to water ratio for a bath.
It could burn/ irritate the skin then you coated it with oil so it can't even breathe.

Call a vet or see a vet.

I would think the oil had to be removed so that the skin could breathe.

They could have a chemical burn from the vinegar.

A bird sitting inthe corner lifeless not eating is a very sick bird & since it happened after that homemade mite treatment it could have caused it or that itching you were seeing was not mites but something else that may be affecting the bird.

Vinegar is an acid & at higher concentrations can burn. The bird may be in pain...

Should you try to remove oil from a bird in such a distressed state it could complicate things
or make it worse...

I hope they will be OK...

I am sorry that your bird is ill. Not eating, not drinking, sitting on the bottom....that's serious.
Agree with others.....get him to a vet. Hope he will be OK.

Oil is a big no no is birds! Its only suggested for scaly face mites and for sore feet...in small quantities like 1/8 of a teaspoon...
50 50 vinegar eater its used to clean The cage! Never The bird... For mites a vet have to confirm The presence of mites...and they put a drop of ivermectine diluted in 0,01% this one is for birds...on The back of The head where he cant reach it...

You are jumping to conclusions. You do not know your bird has "anything" much less mites. Birds spend 80% of their time grooming, preening and looking after their feathers. It's what they do. They go through moults where there will be even more preening and grooming.

If you think your bird is sick you need someone to "correctly" diagnose the problem. You should not be treating your bird with anything without that confirmed diagnosis.

I agree, mites must be diagnosed with a vet, they cannot be self diagnosed or even seen without a microscope. Wash that stuff off your baby now! Dawn dishwashing liquid, just a drop,,,will remove the olive oil. Then do not let the bird get chilled, wrap him/ her in a towel and gently dry those feathers. You need to see a vet, he/ she may have a respiratory infection or something else.. GO NOW! Hope he/ she is ok.

I would wash him with original blue dawn dishsoap and rinse him off with plain water.

Birds make their own oils. Olive oil should not be used on their body like that. He may also need a vet.

It's quite likely at that concentration and with warm water, he has inhaled a lot of acetic acid (the stuff in vinegar) and water. This could be very dire, so you need to get him to a vet ASAP.

I hope you can take him to a vet. If not you need to bathe him in dawn as others have said, and keep him warm, but I really hope you can get him to a vet asap. I hope he's okay, and please keep us updated!

This is what I think too. Go to the emergency vet if you haven't already.
