Hello, I am new here to the forum. My fiancé and I are currently looking for a parrot of our own and are having so much trouble deciding which parrot is best for us.

When I was very young I had a parrotlet and a Senegal. The Senegal was only with me for a short period of time as my family only housed it from an abusive family.

If anyone has any suggestions on quieter parrots please let us know. We have the time to put into training a young parrot. My current work schedule is 4pm-2am I usually sleep till 1030. My fiancé on the other hand is home majority of the time. Any once suggestions and advice would be great as I'm stuck on what to do for a little feathered companion.

Well, my vote will of course be for a cockatiel. They are relatively quiet, especially the females, they are usually not one person birds, they can be very sweet, many enjoy scratches, and they are very smart. Not to mention they are completely adorable!

I highly recommend one in the green cheek conure family. I own a 2 year old maroon belly and am waiting to bring home a 4 week old turquoise. My 2 year old is very quiet unless she is distressed by something. She will whistle for us occasionally but usually repeats moma or papa which as you can imagine works like a charm! Haha She is also extremely affectionate, loves to cuddle and demands that she gets her scritches. I am constantly amazed at how intelligent such a small bird can be! She is the light of our lives! My husband loves her just as much as I do.

Also Welcome! You will get great advice here from much more experienced bird people than me.

I was looking at pineapple conures. I was concerned about them because I have had people tell me they scream often. Is this true? Would I be able to get sleep?

I know that they are super friendly and quiet but unfortunately we are interested in cockatiels or budgies. Thanks for the welcome.

My experience is that pyrrhura conures, this includes pineapples are one of the quietest parrot species. If you google them you will find this on multiple bird sites. This is one reason I chose them. My husband is a process control engineer at a papermill and works some ungodly hours at times. Kiwi has never kept him awake.

Welcome! My current parrots are not exactly quiet but I did have parrotlets for a time and they would be an excellent choice.

Welcome! The green cheek conures are a lot of fun and not loud at all. We have two and they are adorable to watch, how they preen each other and play and snuggle at night. We get a little less snuggle time with them but they are both still shy and new to our family so that might change. Our cockatiel is a lovely bird too, he talks quite a bit and sings three different songs.

No parrot is quiet. Even the small pyrrhura conures have a loud, piercing alarm call. Very shrieky. Personally, they drive me nuts. :wacky:

While conures tend to enjoy physical interaction, cuddling a parrot is generally seen as sexual initiation. Cuddliness just isn't a good measure for a parrot. Cats and dogs fulfill that need much better.

Yes, conures are a lot of fun. Playful, clownish, very devoted. But they're also one of the most frequent to have biting and aggression issues. Take a look at the conure subforum - there's a lot of "Help, my sweet bird turned into a monster" threads. They are very boisterous and bossy, and can easily get out of control when not trained properly, especially through adolescence.

I know that they are super friendly and quiet but unfortunately we are interested in cockatiels or budgies. Thanks for the welcome.
Why not?

My maroon belly is super sweet, cuddly and loves scritches. She did go through a nippy stage but we have worked through it. It happened at about a year old when the baby stage wore off and she became more independent. It didn't last long and was controlled by ignoring her for a little while. She is very affectionate and craves attention so that worked for her. Our avian vet told us to refrain from petting her anywhere but the head and neck. Petting the body triggers sexual behavior. We stuck to that and have had no problems. She loves us equally. I hope this helps!:cantwait:

I agree with @Jaguar. Noise is relative but I have two green cheek conures - a yellow-sided and a pineapple and I would not call them quiet. I love them dearly and most of the time their chatter is subdued but when they make noise, it is ear piercing and repetitive. You can hear them outside the house. Their flock calls and danger calls are very loud. One is more "cuddly" than the other but that baby stage passes as they grow up so I would not rely on that either.

I should have specified what I mean by cuddling I just meant scratching its neck. The cockatiels and budgies just don't do it for me.
