Without knowing the specific species of coffee we will be left to guess....I guess Kentucky coffeetree has a janka hardness of 1390Wonder where java falls. I might be in trouble, too.

Guess I'm in trouble as manzanita is popped like pine here.
I have noticed variations in manzanita through the years. Some of it is either harder than others or the longer it dries the more brittle it become or something. I noticed in drilling it, cutting it and how well it has held up to chewing. I think this has something to do with it too. Manzanita is a common name for many species of the genus Arctostaphylos.
Also, note Balsa has various densities or hardness too although I have yet to locate a scale. Heavier densities can be closer to a softer white pine or closer to that of basswood. I had some recently that I had to drill as I couldn't push a skewer through.
