Update for those not on FB. My little Hachi wasn't feeling so well. I thought perhaps the normal bacterial infection for this time of year. My wee heart bird was experiencing heart failure. :( She was a little less active but once stressed at the vet, she really had a hard time. Cried my eyes out that day as I was not expecting such a dire scenario. But we've added more meds to her regimen as well as antibiotics for some bacteria Dr. O wanted to knock out. She is tired and tires very easily when she startle flies. But she is still hanging in there.

Jasper has congestive heart disease and atherosclerosis - she should have died 12 years ago. I use oxygen for her. One hour twice a day every day. The vet admits (it was my idea to put her on O2 - it was not common 12 years ago) that it has been important for keeping her alive and in pretty good shape.

She is also on Benazipril and Lasix and RPO for her cardiac/circulatory issues.

I forget. How old is Hachi.

Dr. O wanted to talk to me more in-depth because she is not recommending oxygen therapy. I completely forgot the last two appointments to follow up with her about her concerns. She added Lasix and Sildenafil.

We don't know how old she is because she was abandoned. But she has so much arthritis everywhere that Dr. O says she is very elderly. We did a sitting xray this time since Dr. O didn't want to mess with her too much...knocking her out to stretch her wings or legs since touching her is painful in that manner.

I looked up slidenafil - it is viagra. LOL Actually it increases blood flow, so it makes sense.

Jasper has extreme arthritis too. In fact two years ago she had two toes amputated due to the pain. She also has arthritis in the wrist of one of her wings and won't let you touch it. Dr. Driggers put her on gabapentin and Celebrex, which was very effective, but took her off the gabapentin recently because of the risk to kidney function. He has now replaced the gabapentin with CBD an extract from hemp (no TCH at all in it) and it seems to being doing a fair job.
Hemp Oil for minor mind and body stress: Charlotte's Web Everyday

I'm taking CBD too, because I had been taking Tylenol (cannot tolerate any of the NSAIDs) for so many years that I was concerned about liver function. It does reduce the pain fairly well, but I have to take a Tylenol now and then.

PS - Dr. O and Dr. Drigger's wife have been friends for many years. He speaks highly of her as an outstanding vet and a nice person.

Thank you for that new piece of info CBD. I did ask about gabapentin but she didn't think it was the right choice for her...going to get her over this hump (hopefully) and then start looking at focusing on the arthritis.

Considering her issues she appears to be happy and not in pain so keep treating her and keeping her happy. When Lurch first got here he was so outa shape he just hunkered down on his belly on the perches. Onces his flights grew back in every time he startled and did a lap he would sit and fall asleep for like an hour. Luckily he was just outa shape and slowly built up his strength and stamina. I hope she does well and stays happy for whatever time she is given:hug8:
