Hubby found this on the patio, at the foot of the steps - at first glance we thought pygmy rattler, but with a closer look and Google, decided that it is an Eastern Hognose snake
They are non venomous and eat mice/rats, so we let him go
He was only about 5-6 inches long, the first pic in looking down in a quart Ball jar
he almost looks like a cobra here:
and got his tongue in this one
