Hello everyone. I'm Wendy and a new caretaker of a 30 year old Goffin Cockatoo. His previous owner is an older person and just couldn't take Casper screaming all the time.
Ive had birds before, a Quaker and a Nandy Conure, who were treasures.
I would like to know what I can do to keep Casper comfortable, what kind of things that will get him occupied and is it appropriate to rename him

As for a name change...does he respond when you call him by his name?

Welcome to AA and congrats on getting Casper. I probably wouldn't change his name since he's had it for a long time.
I think it's a cute name. I also have a Goffin's and she's probably about 30 years old. Goffin's are very good at taking things apart
and they are also Houdinis when it comes to their cages so make sure that Casper is not able to let himself out of the cage. Otherwise
you might come home to find a few things chewed up or taken apart. They are very intelligent and problem solving and foraging toys
are excellent for them.

I would suggests lots of things to chew, but if he isn’t used to toys introduce them slowly.

You can try some pellets if he hasn’t been eating those yet. My macaw who was fed a terrible diet took instantly to Caitec Oven Fresh Bites and Nutriberries.

If the previous owner wasn’t abusive to him, I’d keep the name.

Welcome to the forum! I have an older goffin also. We've had him for almost a year. If your 'too knows his name, which I'm assuming he does- I wouldn't change it. My 'too's name is Elvis. Not my pick preference, but he says "Elvis" like 20 times a day and definitely knows his name is Elvis. So there's no changing it. Tell us more about Casper and maybe we can offer some suggestions.
