Goldfish tank help, ours is just sad looking

That's a bit of overkill. Think of the electric bill.{even if you do not pay it...} Just get a nice big one. A canister is always more efficient than a HOB, so the 10X rule does not apply.

Pretty much the more the better, so long as they can swim! Most of the plants in the little tank are by the sides, and the back half of the tank is almost empty.
