I've got no experience in this area - but if you are looking for more options that will provide sugar, I'm wondering about carrots, apples and honey. Even some sweet potatoes with honey added? Sounds like he was really close to death, oh my gosh! :(

OH PS: When I was working with a foster tiel that was severely underweight when he came to me, the avian vet said to keep the lights on 24/7. They sleep in the light, but do not eat or drink in the dark. So she had me keep him in light for the first week or so, and weigh each day, same time, prior to eating and monitor his weight to ensure increases each day. Then thereafter, I gradually cut back by putting the lights on a timer. For example, during the night, I would have the lights come on for a couple of hours, then go off for a couple of hours and weaned him back to a normal night time schedule. That was after a week or so when he had already experienced a good weight gain. I would think you don't want to necessarily over do it on the sugar and send his blood sugar the other direction, but the problem not being able to know if it is too high or too low.

I don't understand what's happening. Does he have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or high blood sugar (diabetic)? I know they can treat both disorders/diseases in humans with medications, perhaps they can get the right dosage for Paulie.

Oh Tanya, I ran it by one of the bird experienced Techs here where I work (at the Specialist & Emerg Animal Hosp) and she suggests offering tiny, frequent snacks with fruit (she really thinks dried pineapple and papaya would be best) and veggies mixed. Even through the night, every couple of hours wake him to offer him some food. And Juice!

I so hope the answer to his seizures are simply dietary, and he can live a happy life from now on!
I wish I could kiss his big red beak!!

I think white bread, white pasta, and white rice are also high in glucose. These are things my mom was told to avoid because she is diabetic.

Good luck with Paulie. I hope he feels better soon!

I would try to go with the healthiest options if you need to supply glucose. I wouldnt load up on junk and unhealthy foods. If natural sugar will suffice then I agree with carrots, corn and fresh fruit.

Sorry to see your little one having this problem. It could be the start of diabetes or low blood sugar from what the bird is eating. A suggestion: get some glucose stix from the drug store to check urine samples. With a bird you will have to put down something like poly film to keep the urine from absorbing into the cage bedding or newspaper. Attaching a link so you have an idea what I'm talking about. Be on the look out for yeast when feeding sweets. A few drops of ACV should help control the yeast.

Can't offer any tangible help or suggestions, but I will add him to my prayers. Praying that a simple diet change can help him. Good luck.

Hey Tanya, I don't know off the top of my head what the normal for birds is but for dogs and cats its a blood glucose level of 6-7....

I'm glad little Paulie is feeling better and that the sugars are working, is it possible for you to try a more natural type of sugar instead of the canned stuff? :hug8:

They measure glucose differently in the states. A glucose level of 155 American, is the equivelent of about 8 here in Canada, based on the units we measure it by. I also dont know what is normal range for a bird though, but if 8 is near death, they probably want it over 10 at least.......

Blood glucose levels in the bird are significantly greater than in the cat and dog (200-400 mg/dl) and can go higher transiently with stress. Diabetes mellitus is uncommon in birds but is associated with glucose levels persistently above 900 mg/dl. Blood glucose levels below 150 mg/dl should be considered serious and life threatening.
