My dad is running to get this stand...

It's used, but for 14.99 you can't beat it. I've asked if they could hold it for us, no response yet. My dad is heading over now.

What would be the best way to clean this thing once it comes home? Would distilled white vinegar and water be satisfactory?

Dad got it! He said it's big too, about 30 inches diameter! So maybe I'll keep it downstairs here, so Chirp can have a nice big play area for down here when I can't be bothered to take him upstairs.

And to my original question, would vinegar and water be sufficient to clean this thing? That's what I use to clean his perches and wipe down his cage.

Taxi that’s awesome!
I’d use a little diluted bleach— but vinegar is ok.

I think I know why this thing was only 15 bucks- it's real nasty. The tray/dish is covered in what looks to be uric acid, and there's what I think might be rust? Yikes. I guess whoever sold it to the store must not have cleaned it.

My dad said he could look for a SS pan to replace it. First though he's gonna try to salvage it. I guess if we needed to, we could also replace it with wood or plexiglass or something. It's 28 inch diameter, and I found a stand that looks just like it on Kings Cages website for 109$

Ew ew ew. I washed my hands really well after handling it. It's now sitting in the kitchen, taking up most of the room. I want to gag every time I look at the tray.

It looks like a cooker top that hasn't been cleaned in months. Hope it comes out good though.

Looks like it should clean up okay though. I use F10 for disinfecting and love it.

Shouldn't the rust come off with steel wool or an abrasive cleaner? Or would it go too deep for that?

Power washer, steam cleaning and lots of disinfectant. Replace the dowel with a natural wood perch.

Yes, the tray isn't an issue. The perch can be replaced (and should be) very easily.

My dad picked up some steel wool thingies and a bunch of similar things. So we'll try that.

We might just end up replacing the tray altogether, and I think the same store we got the stand from sells undrilled dragonwood in a lot of different diameters. We'll just have to see how it goes.

So my dad cleaned it up while I was asleep, and it looks great! You can see the little pits where stuff was before, and the finish is dull, but it does the job. So I'll hit it with the water and vinegar again, and we'll probably replace the dowel to a smaller diameter for now.

Progress :)!!!

I would use 10 parts water to 1 part bleach...outside if you can.
We can't do it outside- Currently 29 degrees and snowing. But we can do it in the basement. Dad is mixing the bleach right now, 10 parts water to 1 part bleach like you said. I'm gonna wipe it down now.

Well SOMEBODY (read: me) over tightened the U part that holds the dowel and the weld snapped. Heck. The weld looked like it had been done before, not like a clean, professional weld. So now the perch part is unusable.

My dad is gonna get an SS bolt or something to screw in instead, and an SS washer to go underneath. So it'll just be a platform. I'll put it next to his cage, and probably hang some toys and stuff above it on his current play area. I bet he'd have a ball running around and foraging.
