Hi,

The person who used to clip our nine-year-old GCC's nails was a friend.

When he visited, he'd look at the nails and clipped them as necessary. As a result, I never paid attention to "how long was too long."

I'm sorry to say our friend is no longer with us.

So I have taken a photo. Should these nails be clipped?

How does one guage when a conure's nails need to be clipped?

Thank you.

Ones on the left don't look too bad...one on the right could use a little clip. Usually if the are catching on your shirt etc. Safest is to use a dremel to just take the tip off depending on how short the nail is currently but 1/16th is likely a good start. I have one that I can use finger nail clippers but I know how far I can cut based on previous vet visits. Do you have a vet that can do this during his yearly checkup?

Set the bird down on a flat surface. The feet and toes should set flat on the flat surface. If the end of toes are off the flat surface and/or rolled over some then the nails need clipping.
