Dante goes to the "rainbow bridge"

this afternoon, Dante wasn't feeling very well. She was having a hard time breathing, so we rushed her to the vet. When we took her, they said that they needed to sedate her so they can see what's wrong and do x-rays, because without it she could get scared and get a heart attack. When they tried to sedate her, that's exactly what happened. They were very empathetic, and let me see the body and even gave me a little plaster with her claw prints and her name on top for free. So we brought the body home and buried her in the backyard. Now Jewel is confused and I don't know how to help her cope with Dante's passing because this has never happened to me before. Can someone give me advice, please?

I'm so sorry for your loss. Did you let Jewel see the body? I know it sounds weird but I've seen parrot owners do that so they understand what's happened to their friend and aren't confused. It could never be the same as the other bird of course,but I've seen owners get a replica plushy or something to help with coping. I've never lost a parrot yet so sorry if this isn't good advice. I have no advice but wanted to let you know I am very sorry this happened. What an awful experience for you and poor Dante. Did Jewel see the body of Dante? Some of my pets have had a much easier time comprehending what is happening when they have seen the body of the one that has passed away.

I'm so sorry for you loss It's so hard to cope when a loved one passes. Give Jewel time, she's grieving too. I agree with showing Jewel Dante's body is helpful. If you didn't its ok, it just might take a while longer for it to sync in that Dante is really gone. When my M2 Zane passed it took my U2 Echo a while to adjust to our new "normal". He was extra clingy for a while and would cry out at night when I put him to bed. Everyone grieves differently, including birds. Try not to stress out too much about it, (hard I know). Best thing you can do is just be there for Jewel and follow her ques the best you can. If you wants to stay out or inside her cage a little longer than normal that's ok. Things like that. I saw it coming, I knew she wouldn't come out of the vet alive most likely, but no matter how hard you try, you can never really prepare yourself for the death of a loved one. Jewel seems ok, I didn't want to show her the body because I didn't want to make her feel bad, but she seems pretty good right now. I can't seem to fully wrap my head around it, it all feels like a dream. Thank you all for your condolences
