Cool NZ Bird

Does anyone live in New Zealand? I saw an amazing bird the other day, not sure what it was. I thought it could be some kind of hawk or falcon, but it had bits of white on it. I know it was definitely not a seagull. I live in an area where it's not so common to see falcons or hawks. Just wondering if anyone knew.
(Irrelevant to this, I saw a kereru (if you don't know what that is, look it up, they're beautiful) they are also very rare in the area I live.)

Thank you, I don't think very many people on this site live in New Zealand! It's a great place to live if you're a bird fanatic and an expert bird watcher like my relatives.
