Hi. My cockatoo occasionally gets constipated. He strains to poop, but nothing comes out. During these times he is somewhat aggressive and obviously uncomfortable. Does anyone have a safe remedy for occasional constipation?

Have you spoken with a vet about this? You need to rule out some sort of abnormality with the cloaca before attempting any sort of "remedy".

There's several things that come to mind that could be causing a problem and all of them require vet care.

If your Cockatoo is straining to poop there is the potential for him to prolapse (the cloaca comes outside of the body) and the bird is susceptible to infection. This is a very serious condition and is not uncommon in Cockatoos.

It's time to get your bird to a vet - now.

Your bird may be in danger of a prolapse. You need to discuss that with an avian vet, A veterinarian that specializes in birds. This is a concern for birds that a regular vet would not be familiar with. Here is a video where an avian vet talks about prolapse.

Take the parrot to the vet asap.

Think of it as a preventative measure. Just like if we get to the dentist and get a filling, we won't lose the tooth. Treat the issue by an avian vet quickly and save your money and the parrot's long term health.

Have you had the bird checked by avian vet for this?
