We celebrated it this past weekend rather than the weekend of because of the President's Day long weekend (we went out of town, as did most of our friends). But it's my family's favorite holiday and we celebrate, of course, with food! I cooked a feast using almost all recipes handed down from my mother
A lot of the foods are very symbolic for the new year. Whole fish symbolize prosperity, whole chicken for unity, turnip cakes bring good luck, fresh noodles and greens (under shiitake mushrooms) for longevity, sticky rice and dumplings (not pictured) for wealth, and then oyster lettuce wraps because we always had them growing up, but I don't think they're traditional Eight dishes total for extra good luck!
And of course we had to have Hong Kong egg tarts for dessert. Pastry is a challenge for me but these were my best batch yet.
Happy Year of the Dog, everybody! If you celebrate, what did you do?
