I'm going to be having new carpet installed within the month and need some advice about how safe it would be for the birds to come back the same day?

I'm getting some work done on my floors and I'm taking birds off premises. It is my understanding if you smell it, it's bad.

By the way, some carpet has bad stuff in it.

When I was looking at carpet, I found some had the spray on scotchguard also.

new carpet has lots of vocs, incl. formaldehyde.
it is often recommended that you ask the seller to open and air out in their warehouse for a week.
If you can smell it, it is not safe for the birds. I doubt it will be OK to move them back same day.

When I had new carpet installed my birds stayed at my mom's for about 2 weeks. New carpet gives off fumes/gases so not good to bring your birds back the same day of the installation.

By the way, you can get a spec sheet on products to know what is in the carpeting or floor related products.

@JLcribber were you the one with the link to where to find those?

Just type MSDS (material safety data sheet) and the material you want into google.

Carpet is one of the stinky ones. It's going to smell for quite a few days.

What you can do is ask them to lay it out and air in the warehouse (for as long as possible). Give you a head start. Tell them you have allergies.

@janicedyh

I never thought about saying allergies, would probably pack some weight with folks.

One of my tenants had a flood so we had to replace the carpet in LR DR. She has allergies & she was complaining about the odor & how she was coughing & sick.

It has to air & I read baking soda overnight then vac or shampoo it with vinegar solution can help.

I'd plan on keeping them somewhere about a week. Do the baking soda thing & maybe shampoo it.
