What are the chances of a canary living through anesthesia. He has to have an op to remove his one leg because of gangrene.

My vet has said that is it very safe for birds (I don't have small ones, just Macaws) and he is VERY experienced with the use of it and I think that might be a factor. I would have more trust if the vet is an Avian vet, not mainly a dog and cat vet.

Either way, if the leg has gangrene, there are not many options left and if the little one does not make it because of the anesthetic, that would be a more humane way to go vs leaving the gangrene as that would be a slower death.

Hoping for you that your canary makes it through, please keep us updated.

I live in the UK you see and since I don't drive I had to use the best one around me, my vet is very nice and looks after all my other animals, he never makes the canary's bleed when he cuts the nails which most of the other vets would around me. He told me this morning that there would be a 50/50 chance of survival, and that I had only 3 options which was
1. Put him to sleep.
2. Leave him on metacam untill he goes and just let it spread thou his body.
3. Take the chance and have it removed.

I hope I made the right decision. ):

You made the right decision.

At least you will be giving him a chance with the surgery. To leave him on the drugs until it spreads to me is not an option, that would not be the right thing to do.

When is the surgery? My thoughts will be with you both.

Where did you hear that? It is "always" a serious risk putting any bird under anesthetic. Just as dangerous as the surgical procedure itself. Don't ever think they do well.

From the vet clinic I use to work at we put several bird under for various things from nail trims to serious op and they always did well even the ones on the smaller side ..even though its more tricky then dogs or cats its not like it was in the 90s there are safer drugs out there now :)

He survived!
Now all he has to do is have a check up later on, and hopefully when I get him back he should be hopping around like a good en!
