So I noticed couple days ago Milo had some ratty feathers and I thought maybe the feathers were just molting out. He turns one on the 20th of this month so he still has a lot of down and hasn't had a full proper molt. However today I saw some areas near his foot were chewed. He's been eating his fruits and veggies just fine and hasn't lost weight. He's had no behavioral symptoms and is happy to shower and play with his toys.

Because of eclectus special dietary needs he does not get pellets (other than the odd few as supplementation) Instead he get 80% fruit and vegetables, 20% sprouts and legumes. I'm almost entirely sure this is the result of some sort of nutrient problem (as it often is with eckies) and plan on taking him to the vet.

My question is what blood tests should I ask for? My vet is an avian specialist but he's not as knowledgeable with eclectus. He said he should be on pellet diet which is known to cause problem in eckies.

I am by no means an expert, and I'm not familiar with ekkies, but I do know that when I mentioned foot chewing to my avian vet yesterday for my conure, he ran a CBC with differential and came back with a Vitamin A deficiency. He said to increase pellet consumption, which isn't easy, so he said veggies like sweet potatoes can help too. Good luck with your baby!

Leanna, I applaud you for being such a good Ekkie momma. Most vets, even Avian vets push pellets because they don't us to be knowledgeable about a balanced Ekkie diet. There is truth there when it comes to some people who don't educate themselves about their specific needs. We must always keep up learning as we go. These guys are complicated physically AND emotionally
