I understand its difficult for them to produce healthy babies and that the price can be upwards over fifteen thousand. We have a not too active member here that has one living in Florida.

He was gorgeous! As I understand it, black cockatoos are rather rare in the US? They are still somewhat rare in Australia as I think most states require a license to keep them, but they are around $2,000+ from a breeder. This pet store had 3 but I'm not sure if they were actually for sale, I think they may have just been permanent residents of the store.

I did meet a lovely yellow tail black cockatoo a few years ago that was a friends, he was gorgeous. He was very sweet but also very boisterous and playful. I've only met a handful of pet black cockatoos as they aren't as common but they are quite different to the white cockatoos. They seem more laid back but also a bit more dominant.

We have a black palm cockatoo at the aviary here but I've never seen any here as pets. They are gorgeous.

OMG! My DREAM BIRD! He is gorgeous and he is an adult since he has lost his spots! Yep, they are a rarity here in the US and go for about $15K. You can still get them if you're willing to take a second out on your house or just won the lottery! They are different from the white 'toos...different personalities. Still a Cockatoo...what I wouldn't give for a RTB2 though! Be still my beating heart! Thank you so much for the pictures! I'm sending them to my S/O and hinting about a refinance!;)

try this the next time you go to the pet store. I did this at Tampa Zoo. I called a high pitched Hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooooo and then tap with a pencil on piece of wood or shelve. this was the reaction I got at the zoo. the keepers there were like WoW, he is calling back to a human. this poor bird was alone in a cage with bunch a chickens. his mate had passed away. I did this the several times while we were in kangaroo junction.

It looks to me that you are confusing the red-tailed black cockatoo with the palm cockatoo. Both fascinating and beautiful birds that I had the pleasure of meeting at the San Nation Zoo.

I don't think this bird is for sale ,it is the pet store owners bird. In Australia one must get a permit to own certain native species.

Does one need a permit to own these birds in Australia . From what I understand Australia has very strict laws about avian ownership.

Gorgeous!

We used to get yellow tailed black cockatoos in our yard, and they were lovely too :D

In Victoria, at least, one would need to apply for an advanced private wildlife licence in order to own one of these birds (we have licence requirements for pretty much every native animal, bar a few basic ones such as blue-tongues and birds like budgies, cockatiels, and some lorikeets and rosellas).

We need this kind of regulation in the U.S... and some kind of class on species before just anyone can buy. Hopefully that would cut down on the overflow in rescues, and abused & abandoned birds. :(

They were great, but they stopped coming round after the tree who's nuts they came to eat got felled in a storm-- there were about ten or so of them, and they sure made the front gate a noisy place to walk through

But you never know, they might come back someday-- we got gang-gangs for the first time this year, so anything's possible :D

It certainly wouldn't hurt-- these licenses aren't hard to get (with the assistance of a legal guardian, you can get one when you're ten), but they do help with impulse buying a lot, which seems to be how a lot of birds and people find themselves in trouble
