Beak injury

I'm not 100% sure of how this happened, but Kalypso's (my parrotlet) beak has an injury on top. I'm angry at myself as I suspect it happened whilst Kira (IRN) was trying to get Kalypso through the bars of Kalypso's cage. Kira is rarely in her own cage and spends most of the day flying around. Kalypso was not impressed with me for holding her like this for photos and for wound cleaning.

We had my in-laws over this past weekend and normally the littles (Pi's cage too) are in our spare room so that Kira can't scare them/bother them as she is normally out of her cage. With the company over, both were in their cages in the main area where Kira is. Kira would not stop trying to get them!

I've what I need to keep her beak clean and disinfected (I've a penchant for taking in injured rescues), but I just want to be sure that this should heal fine (reassurance). She's not changed her attitude at all (trying to be nippy with me per usual, good sign), and it seems more superficial than anything, but I just want to be sure.

I would suggest taking her to the vet just to be on the safe side. Best wishes!

Unfortunately, due to circumstances that would take way too long to explain, I'm flat broke until my next pay day ☹ and, I know the internet is not a vet office, but my vet is a general one...we dont have Avian specialist in my area, or even close.

I'm so sorry, just stick around, the right person will find you. :sadhug2:

Poor little guy, that looks painful :(

Next time the littles are in the living room like that, cover the top and two sides of the little ones cages with cotton sheets. It will give them a little more protection.

That's why I'm mad at myself ☹ I didn't think to do that until after I noticed the wound. Once I thought to cover it, Kira wouldn't land on it let alone go near them. If I had thought of it in the first place, she wouldnt have gotten hurt . I don't blame Kira, she was just doing what birds do. I should have realized it.

The biggest immediate concern with a beak injury is eating. Monitor when she is actually consuming. If she is eating normally you will probably have a smoother recovery.

If you can get to a vet after your pay period, you can confirm if there is a more serious issue. I would go in for a check up, the sooner the better.

Accidents can happen. It is always scary, especially between different sized birds. Do you best to take more precautions. Parrotlets' fearlessness is a huge hindrance to them sometimes.

Thinking of little Kalypso. I hope she is feeling ok today. :sadhug2:

Thank you. Yes, I do ly best to keep Kalypso and Kira separate because tiny Kalypso will fly at Kira!!! She's acting completely normal for eating and such, just a bit more sookie for her mama ❤ I'm totally fine with some extra love for my babygirl. As luck has it, I have the proper cleanser and such on hand to keep it clean and healing. So I'm glad to hear that her eating fine is a good sign. She was even rubbing her beak to clean it, so I'm not sure it hurts too much (thankfully).

The wound does look pretty superficial, there is a little bruising and it would be nice if you could give her some Metacam for a couple of days for the pain.

That's one of the few things I don't have...my arthritic cat was on it, but they changed it to a different one (the name eludes me right now, it's 2am).

Oh oh oh! I'm so stupid! I have a friend whose a vet and she's helped before with my beardies (long story). Just hit me that she would probably help out! Brain fog is heavy lately.

She seemed happier this morning - I cleaned up her wound (I have vet grad wound cleaner from when my dog broke his claw). She's eating and drinking and otherwise looks great!
