Last night I brought home two baby emus.
We have the room for them, for anyone freaking out.

For those remembering from my Harvey thread that I wasn't sure how my husband would react, he said "yes... I love you... And your damn emus".
He isn't thrilled but he is taking it much better than I expected.

OMG They are the cutest, I love the little spots on their head! :xflove:
How much space do you need for them? When they grow up will they be friendly?

Have you researched emus?

They're wild animals and can cause some very serious damage when they grow up. Five people have died due to emus, and many more injured.

Also, have you checked the laws in your area? They're illegal in many places.

I have to say though... they are adorable

However for anyone thinking about getting emus, a much less dangerous and tamer pet would be ducks or chickens:)

Casey is in Australia and has taken classes that allow her to properly care for the emus (and other native species).

We've got just under an acre for them currently, though within a year or two we should be getting a larger property so theyll have more room: currently saving up to buy a bigger place.
They say around an acre is a good minimum, however many people keep them in less or more. Length is more important than width as they're runners.

They imprint similar to chickens and ducks at hatch,
So incubated birds tend to end up similar to dogs if interacted with a lot, but still with a strong flight instinct if scared.

Parent hatched birds raised by humans tend to be less tame, though still friendly, but not so open cuddles/patting etc.

Beyond the flight instinct one major concern is they investigate with their beak like all birds, so people can often see it as aggressive or mean when the bird is just checking them out.

They are so cute.
Congratulations. And I am glad your husband is agreeable about it.

I took on you advice of just doing it, as you had, felt sick all day worrying about his reaction. Whilst he obviously thinks they're rediculous, he's okay.
So thank you :hug8:

I know it isn't to everyone's taste, and I wouldn't do it if he had died of old age, but since my boy Harvey was taken from me early I've decided to name one Harvey... Telling myself he has come back bigger and badder than before!
The other hasn't got one yet... I want something ultra feminine?

I thought cassowaries held the record at only 2 human deaths, though that was a few years ago.

I understand your concern,
They certainly can be dangerous. The personality of a dog with the flight instinct of a horse is how they're described as pets.
When hand raised the main safety issue is just that... Being in their way should something spook them.

I have an advanced wildlife license, and as below, am in Australia.
We certainly have a healthy respect for emus here, I don't think you can grow up in most parts of Australia without having a run in with a wild emu as a kid haha

They're really not that uncommon as pets/paddock bums here, just seen as not a big deal as emus aren't very exciting to most Aussies. So they're not talked about but you'll see them in people's properties a lot.

I certainly respect what they can do, both intentional and unintentional.
I've owned many elapids as an example of having a healthy respect of what an animal in my home is capable of.

Casey is in Australia and has taken classes that allow her to properly care for the emus (and other native species).

Thank you, Sandra, you're a love :hug8:
