The fact that the person was not in her parking spot, like she would have normally been, tells me that somebody was looking out for that little guy- a guardian angel. Every sign was directed at you to find this cute little one.

My mother found two newborn kittens on her car's front tires years ago and she still has nightmares about it to this day. Luckily, she is a very observant person.

Welcome back to the world of felines. :)
That's what Steph kept saying, she's trying to find deals for me on cat supplies. I'm taking it day by day. I hope Fu makes it. He's strong and man, has he got vocal chords, and a good grip. It certainly seems like events lined up for me to find him, I wasn't even thinking about a cat.
I was planning on closing off my kitchen anyway so the birds couldn't get to it. Guess I have a particularly good reason to now. I can clear out my loft too. Finish closing it off with animal mesh, and make it a dedicated cat room. Between it and the kitchen, and the porch screen, he should be good.
I don't blame your mom, I'd be right there too.

After I lost Babs (Baby, Baby Fred as he was later known) I wasn't certain about another cat, he was perfect. We had a connection. He was with me through the passing of my first two dogs, middle school, high school and college graduation. He knew when I really needed him.

I'm no expert I've only fostered a litter of three, but my advice is to let her go at her own pace, and don't worry.

Soon enough you can the feedings down at night, she will adjust to your schedule:). Fuku is cute:heart:

Sorry I missed this post! Thank you!
Ha, I'll do my best to try to not worry, I'm a perpetual worry-wart. Even on anxiety meds.

Congrats on your welcoming a new furry friend into your heart. If you need help with names just ask.
Thank you! I appreciate it. I'm waiting for confirmation on the sex. I mean, Fu was either going to stay with me or go to my good friend (who is a cat dad).
I'm just hoping he makes it.

My vote is leaning on male. But then again, I missed the microscopic "peas" on Nickel (who was going to be named Penny right up until the vet corrected us) back when we found him.

From the looks of it you'd have to write her name out in kanji to avoid confusion. OR maybe try a slightly different synonym like charm or fortune which would give you names like Sachi and Tomi?

And I ... *ahem* we want more photos.

Those are good ideas! We’ll see, nothing is set in stone. Right now I’m just hoping s/he makes it past this teeny phase.

LOL!! Working on it. He’s so squirmy it’s hard to get pictures!

Yep, been there done that! I’m leaning the same way but we’ll find out tomorrow!

Your pictures reminded how much I tend to rely on being able to feel for testicles in addition to taking a look. I vote male too. Often in cats this young the biggest difference is the distance between the anus and the genitals, it's farther in males. But we are talking such tiny differences in a kitten this young, so even professionals can be wrong at this stage.

You were talking about containment strategies. I had containment issues also because I have no space which is kitten-proofed enough to leave them unsupervised.

In case it helps, here is one of the best investments I ever made for kitten fostering, for containing only when not supervised. Your kitten is too young to need this, plus he's not big enough to reliably maintain his own body temperature so it's best not to leave him in a space this big on his own, which you probably already know. But when he's a couple of weeks old, this pen might be helpful. The bottom is solid fabric but the top is mesh, and both zip off easily. It has held up really well. If you get a different one, I'd just make sure the doors are zipper-closed and not velcro.

I also then use puppy pads to line the bottom, which makes for easier cleanup. Looks like this, basically. These kittens were newborns and under mom in this photo. When then are old enough to start using the litterbox, I switch to 2 smaller shallower boxes. Food and water bowls fit nicely in the space also, even with the 2 boxes.

Welp, my vet says that Fu is a healthy little...

Maybe boy. :p They're not sure yet but he looks like a boy. We go back in two weeks to see for sure. And also to test for leukemia and feline AIDS.
No fleas and the vet said that he's in remarkably good condition so whatever I'm doing is working. He ate 6.5ml this afternoon. Vet said to slowly increase amount per feeding and space out the feedings more as I do.
Either way, I feel relieved. She said (it's my bird vet's wife who is equally amazing) that he's got a really good chance at survival. Mom and I were talking about it, that it was funny that only in the last month or so I started watching animal rescue videos, including orphaned kittens. Which probably popped up because my favorite TV behaviorist is Jackson Galaxy from "My Cat from Hell".

I understand! I can't imagine it's easy to sex without holding them, I mean, I'm bad at it even when holding them. The videos I watched about it all had older kittens too. Male seems to be the unanimous vote, despite the uncertainty, it seems pretty likely to me.

THANK YOU! This is great! I was looking at those yesterday, I figure I'll wait before I get too crazy with buying stuff he won't need right away. I had no idea what I was looking for but that's perfect, and if it's proven to be good by someone with experience it seems like a good buy to me. What litter pans do you usually use? Any and all recommendations about any and all supplies are great. Aww, that mama cat looks so cute with her babies all tucked away. I got one of those stuffed animals that has the heating pad in it and the mimicked heartbeat, one of those microwavable heating pads, and fleece. He's in a tub right now, lined with fleece and enough room to get away from the heated blanket.

Precious & LUCKY! I love grey cats...Mom may have got trapped or killed. They won't usually leave but sometimes they transfer kittens & they will keep going back to get them one by one. There may have been others & mom did not make it back...She may have been coming back too for it when you got it first...

Any way...

We always had them bringing kittens but moms would tend to them under the porch.

Mom had one bring them into her yard from the neighbors & then I think the mom moved them but they were kittens from the neighbors cat.
Mom was offered a kitten & its the most beautiful cat now...

Rub the belly & elimination areas with a warm damp cloth to encourage it to relieve itself...

You can feed human formula I suppose...

In the house I think its warm enough but a towel or blanket in a box is great...

Good Luck with you Shadow....

I'd lean toward male too & the distance thing is true but its easier to see when you have a male & female together.

Thank you! I was afraid of that, I was thinking about trying to trap mom (spay and release) and the other kittens but I'd have to talk to the school board and the resource lab first. And, with the kittens as tiny as Fu is I'd be afraid disturbing them could be dangerous. I'd never seen a cat around there before so you could be right about her. I have no idea but we're here now.

I've been using KMR for him after a panicked drive to Tractor Supply, got a better price on Amazon and a bigger supply.

And thank you! That's a good point, the video I was watching showed the difference and it was easy to see. Then, I looked at Fu and still had no idea.

I had a similar pen when I rescued a couple of feral kittens. It was amazing for helping them socialise and get used to people in the lounge room.

Is he kneading claws yet? Photos are so sweet.
Yes, especially when he’s purring after feeding and getting a rub down.

That’s awesome! I’ll pick one up soon. It sounds like a must-have.

@BeanieofJustice You're doing such an amazing job!!! He looks so good and I am loving the pictures of him!! One of my favorite things about baby kittens is watching them start to groom themselves before they can even walk, I'm looking forward to you seeing that!

I started to put a list together of supplies I usually find useful but then it morphed into a list of additional care tips in general. So I'll post it here just in case there is any helpful new info for you but you're doing such a great job already, and I can tell you've done a ton of research and have probably come across a lot of this already. I don't want to overwhelm you any further so take this all with a grain of salt. :)

1) Puppy pads are also WAY cheaper on Amazon than in pet supply stores.

2) Tapping gently at the anus/genitals to stimulate elimination works as well as rubbing and can help avoid the inflammation we see sometimes. But then again, mama cats rub and they do it with a barbed tongue so it probably doesn't matter that much. LOL

3) Their immediate surroundings should be about 85 F when this young. So you're doing the perfect thing with the supplemental heat with room to crawl away from it when needed. I would continue this for 2-3 weeks at least. To avoid the ability to crawl away too far from it, I usually keep them in a cardboard box lined with puppy pads and towels.

4) If you have a gram scale, like for food, that's awesome. Your kitten is doing so well I'm not sure you really need to go buy one unless there are signs of trouble. But with a litter of neonates I usually keep a chart of daily weight. General guidelines are 100g at birth, then 10-15g (on average, there will be fits and starts) per day. After about 3-4 weeks I stop weighing except for deworming purposes, since their survival rate gets much better if they make it that long. Weight can be useful for keeping tabs on whether he's eating enough since it is often the first sign of illness. (The PDF I mention below has a chart for how much they should eat at each stage.)

5) As someone else mentioned, eyes begin to open at 7-10 days. And deworming with pyrantel should start at 2 weeks of age, then every 2 weeks after that. You can take him to your vet for that, but if you are able to weigh him at home, some vets may give you the amount you'll need for the first couple of months in a small bottle with an oral syringe to measure it out. Just be sure to get it from your vet though. You can buy it OTC I think but I'd worry about the formulation and quality. As for whether he needs deworming, he totally does. Most orphans come from homeless mamas who eat random things, and infections are usually passed in utero.

6) You asked about a litterbox. When he is reliably walking around on his own and you start to see pee spots on the puppy pads, I'd start with maybe a small pan with low-ish sides, like maybe a small baking pan, and put a shallow layer of litter over it. Super important is using a litter that wont clump hard, I use Worlds Best, which is corn based. If he eats it, it's not great but at least it won't form a ball of concrete in his stomach like the clay-type clumping litters will. If he eats it, take it away and maybe try a different one, like a paper-based one. When he is big enough to climb into a litterbox, I'd start using one of those super-cheap small low-sided open boxes. That will get him through his kittenhood just fine.

That's it for now. I hope that wasn't too much of a repeat of everything you already know! I also have a very informative PDF presentation put together by a veterinarian on orphan kitten care, but it's too large to post here. If you want to PM me your email address I'd be happy to try sending it that way.
