Today marks three years since I had to say goodbye to my beloved Niko. Some of you knew him as Anica when I was active years back. I took a general life tumble and left the forum for a few years, so never had the chance to post about him here. I can't believe it's been so long.
He was the light of my life for eight years. Friendly to a fault and truly deserving of the name lovebird. His feathers were bright and beautiful but paled in comparison to his delightful, vivacious spirit.
One day I noticed him favoring his foot and hurried him to the vet, thinking his leg was broken and completely confounded. How had he hurt it? But no, the x-rays revealed it was cancer. The doctor told me she could amputate his leg but it was possible the cancer had already spread so far that it wouldn't save him, so I instead made the impossible decision to let him go peacefully. We had three final weeks together and I spoiled him so! The little rascal got hardly a moment to himself through that time. I'm grateful I had that chance... to know the end was coming and to make the best of what we had left.
These were the last photos I took of my baby. He always loved car rides and that last one was no exception.
Rest well, sweet Niko.
