I am new here but looking to see if anyone has advice. A month ago my grey was breathing rapidly. I got her to an avian vet and he did bloodwork, xrays the whole nine yards. Xrays showed cloudiness near her lower air sacs. He said it was air sacullitis. Put her on SMZ TMP, Albuterol, benebac, and Metacam. Went back after a week and he took her off the meds and says to use albuterol as needed. She had another episode a week later. He didntseem concerned. Had my local vet send off another gram stain, it came back clear. I got up this morning and she was breathing rapidly again. Here is what it looks and sounds like: . Her tailfeathers are bobbing as well. I feel like noone can see there is something wrong here. I have reached out to another avian vet but he cant see her til later this afternoon. Just wondering if anyone has ever seen this before.

I just got an email from her avian vet and it said the following:

"She’s going to have good days and bad days, and as she gets older, there will be more bad ones. The only thing that I can think of that may help is sildenafil (Viagra). We typically use it in animals to treat pulmonary hypertension, but it may have some benefit with pulmonary fibrosis. I’ll do so research and see if there’s anything else we can try. Keep doing what you’re doing, and if she gets worse you can run her in for another dexamethasone injection or oxygen therapy if needed. I’ll be out of the office til Saturday, but they can reach me if they need to."

I forgot to add..she is just almost 20 years old.

thank you! I will see if there are places near me that i could get something like that today. Probably a medical supply place for people? I will google and see how to make this...i had looked at how to make a nebulizer for her, so maybe similar?
Imso afraid she is gonna die before they figure out whats going on with her :(

yes just like a nebulizer box. if you can't find it locally you can take her in for day long oxygen sessions at the vet, or twice a day or whatever they recommend. That company ships fast.

My GW has been on twice daily oxygen therapy for 15 years. She had Asper, has CHF and atherosclerosis. Be sure to get the oxygen set up I have the Devilbuss 525DS too. Until she is stabilized she will probably need to be on medication and O2. Nebulizing is the very best way to get medications deep into their respiratory system - BUT IT DOES NOT PROVIDE CONCENTRATED O2.

Your girl really appears to me to have something wrong. Ask your new vet lots and lots of questions and make sure you get the answers.

Well we are home, its a 4 hr round trip for us. He sent off a culture and then something to test for Asper. He said her trachea and something else was red and swollen. He injected her with fluids and started her on baytril. No oxygen. I asked how to go about getting oxygen if i made her something at home because..dont you have to have a script for that? He said he didnt want to do that. She wasnt acting like she was in the video when we got there, but i showed him the video. I am not sure of this guy either. Once I made it back home and checked my email, I saw where the previous avian vet (he only sees exotics on tues) told me not to take her to this place and take her to where he works and they would call him and get her in some oxygen. ugg well too late now...they are closed...as that is about 4hrs round trip too. Theres no such thing as emergency vets for birds here (im about 2hrs away from memphis, so you would think).

Well once we made it back home I got her to eat a little....she also needs to gain some weight...though she eats all the time and gave her the baytril. She was ready to go to her cage after this day. Now I look over and see her trachea area going in and out again. I feel like she's not gonna make it. The vetsI am taking her too are listed on aav.org so I thought I was doing the right thing. I am not sure what to do at this point.

I have never heard of any vet badmouthing another one like that.

I don't like the way she is bobbing her tail in that video.

yes sylvester, that tailbobbing made me very frantic. She did that a few weeks ago and i emailed the vet a video, it was on a sunday. That same day she started taking her foot and pulling violently at her beak. So I told him about that in the email. He wanted me to put saline drops in her nose or he would do a flush on tuesday. and to keep giving albuterol. I think I am just devastated that all of the vets I am going to dont seem too worried. When I am afraid she is going to die at any minute.

Have you all heard of anyone here from northeast arkansas? or memphis, tn.. that would possibly have a good recommendation for a vet. I am gonna call my regular vet tomorrow to see if he would help me with getting oxygen for her at least and try and figure out how to make her something.

OK - the people who sell the O2 machines don't require prescriptions here is a place you can buy a used concentrator from and save several hundred dollars. Used Oxygen Concentrators - Refurbished Oxygen Concentrators - Reconditioned I just bought my second one from them - the first one lasted 15 years.

You need to put your baby in a hospital cage - which means any small area or carrying cage to keep her quiet and be able to keep her very warm (85-90f). Put a heating pad under 1/2 of the cage. She needs to eat to have the energy to fight. Get some baby bird mash and feed her with a syringe or spoon. I would say that she has an upper respiratory infection or Aspergillsis a fungal infection of the lungs (AGs are one of the birds that is most susceptible to Asper). You need to question your vet very closely about the albuterol - it is generally not recommended for birds.

If you have a nebulizer put her in it with .09% saline solution in it and nebulize her twice a day for 30 minutes. Do that now. If you don't have the .09 use distilled water until you can get the saline.

She sounds like she is becoming critical and you need to intervene.

Hank, do i need a presciption for the actual oxygen tank or do these not need those? I am sorry I dont know much about this stuff. I just remember the medical company would come replace tanks when a family member had to use one.

there's no tank. It takes air and concentrates out the oxygen from it and delivers it to the patient. I paid less for a brand new machine than the refurbished one :)
