Okay, we have a major problem with squirrels inside our attic/chewing into our house etc. We have tried everything & are planning to try essential oils to get them out. What ones are safe for birds? We are at our wits end &- these squirrels are a major danger to our home being burned down etc.

I honestly don't know how effective that would be.... which ones are squirrels supposed to not like?

have you tried synthetic predator urine products?

The humane society has things on their page like Apple cider vinegar on rags because squirrels don't like the smell, playing radio 24/7, bright light, etc.

Personally I know folks that trap and remove them (across a river).

Have you tried to find where they are coming in? Block that and problem solved.

We've blocked multiple places & they just chew through. We've even put metal screening over one & they ate through that too. We've tried socks with mothballs in them, fox urine. All of the above have NOT worked. We haven't tried the ACV, we will definitely try that. There are honestly so many that go in & out of holes in our house that we can't possibly trap & release them all. My dad is a contractor & works in construction so he knows how to block/fix things properly.

Your only real solution then is an exterminator sadly.

You must have a very holey house? :) We've had squirrels living in our yard for years. There is no way in.

My grandpa gets red squirrels. Uses a live trap to relocate them.

screening will not do it, and they will chew thru it. try hardware cloth 1/8" size squares and staple it in place. we get them at the farm a lot, in the barn.

I don't think essential oils will help with getting rid of squirrels but you wouldn't have to worry about the birds inside your house. The house is sealed from the attic and so they won't smell the essential oils that you used up there. Good luck!

This site has some suggestions. How to Get Squirrels Out of the Attic

Also catching & relocating squirrels is illegal in many states. Seems as tho they can transmit diseases & also they do not do well with relocation. They die. In PA if you catch a squirrel or skunk you must kill it & bury it on site.
